The Vincent Massey Trojans started slowly but came thru with a 60-47 victory over the Oak Park Raiders Tuesday evening to capture third place in the Radisson High School Girl’s Wesmen Classic. The Trojans led 27-15 at halftime, which was sparked by a 12-0 run midway thru the first half. In the second half Oak Park played better scoring 32 points but the Trojans capitalized on several Raider turnovers to seal the victory. Sarah Penner led the Trojans with 14 points while Lauren Gavrailoff had 14 points for the Raiders.

The Lions roared in this game. The Glenlawn Lions defeated the River East Kodiaks 67-35 in the championship game of the Radisson High School Girl’s Wesmen Classic on Tuesday night. The Lions started strong as they built a 13-1 lead before the game was five minutes old. The score at halftime was 32-18 in Glenlawn favor. In the second half the Lions continued their strong play as they outplayed the Kodiaks in every aspect to cruise to the championship. Georgia Harvey led the Lions with 19 points while Jackie Lester had 14 points for the Kodiaks.

The Glenlawn Lions defeated the M.B.C.I Hawks 90-64 to advance to the semi-finals of the high school boys division of the M.T.S. Mobility Wesmen Classic. The Lions were never threatened in this game as they led 58-21 at half time. Guard Cam Hornby led the Lions with 28 points while Dillon Tielman led the Hawks with 30 points. The Lions will face the winner of the Oak Park- J.H. Bruns contest in one semi final tomorrow afternoon.

The Oak Park Raiders jumped out to a 32-20 half-time lead against the J.H. Bruns Broncos and never looked back as they went on to defeat the Broncos 68-48. The Raiders were led in this game by the duo of James Horaska and Dallas Bosko who each scored 14 points. Cyril Indome led the Broncos with 28 points and was named player of the game. The Raiders will now face the Glenlawn Lions in one semi-final tomorrow at 4:00 p.m.

The Fort Richmond Centurions used a strong second half to defeat the Sisler Spartans 76-71 to advance to the semi-finals of the high school boys division of the M.T.S. Mobility Wesmen Classic. The Spartans were up 36-34 at half-time but the Centurions outplayed the Spartans in the second half to squeeze out the victory. Grant Rayner, who was the Player of the Game led the Centurions with 24 points while Eric Garcia led the Spartans with 19 points. The Centurions will face the winner of the Garden City-Jeanne Sauve contest in the other semi final tomorrow evening.

The College Jeanne-Sauve outscored the Garden City Fighting Gophers 80-73 to advance to the semi-finals of the M.T.S. Mobility Wesmen Classic in the high school division. The Olympiens had a strong second half scoring 44 points to get the victory. The Fighting Gophers led at half time 40-36. Nick Lother and Chris Cobb paced the Olympiens scoring 22 points each in the victory. Brad Naron led the Fighting Gophers with 27 points. The Olympiens will face Fort Richmond Wednesday evening at 4:00 p.m.

The two teams were tied at halftime 32-32 in which both teams matched each other shot for shot. Dillon Tielman led the Hawks with 18 points while Cyril Indome poured in 41 points for the Broncos.

The University of Saskatchewan Huskies showed why they are one of the top teams in the country. The Huskies played a solid game on both ends of the court as they defeated the Universite du Quebec a Montreal Citadins 89-77 in the first game of the university section of the M.T.S. Mobility Wesmen Classic.  The Huskies led at halftime 39-35 with Canada West scoring leader Andrew Spagrud scoring 13 points in the half.  In the second half the Huskies scored 50 points to take control of the game and earn the victory. Spagrud finished the game with 25 points while Marc-Olivier Beauchamp led the Citadins with 17 points. The Huskies will face the winner of the Alberta-Guelph game in one semi final tomorrow evening.

Strong defense and timely baskets helped the Alberta Golden Bears defeat the Guelph Gryphons 80-73 in the university section of the M.T.S. Mobility Wesmen Classic.  The Golden Bears raced out to a  32-20 halftime lead. In the second half Alberta continued their strong play for most of the half but saw the  Gryphons pull to within five points in the last two minutes but the Golden Bears showed their grit and hung on for the win.  Phil Sudol led the Golden Bears with 18 points while Jeff Rosar had 31 for the Gryphons. The Golden Bears will face the Saskatchewan Huskies in one semi final tomorrow evening at 8:00 p.m.

 The defending provincial champions, Glenlawn Lions advanced to the Finals of the high school draw of the M.T.S. Mobility Wesmen Classic with a 76-70 victory over the Oak Park Raiders. Cam Hornby led the Lions with 22 points while James Horaska contributed with 19 points for the Raiders. The Lions will face the winner of the Fort Richmond- Jeanne Sauve match in the high school final on Thursday at 6:00 p.m.

The Winnipeg Wesmen used home court advantage to defeat the Lakehead Thunderwolves 86-77 in their opening game of the M.T.S. Mobility Wesmen Classic. An excited crowd of 1700 spectators saw a tightly contested battle in the first half one that saw the Wesmen take a 39-38 lead at half-time. In the second half the Wesmen shot 54% including 6-11 from the three- point mark to seal the victory. Guard Erfan Nasajpour led the Wesmen with 35 points and Dan Shynkaryk poured in 24 points. The Thunderwolves were led by Kiraan Posey who had 26 points in the loss. The home town Wesmen will face the winner of the Manitoba-Cariboo match in the semi finals tomorrow evening at 6:00 p.m.

The University College of the Cariboo got a taste of Canada West basketball and they seem to like it. The Sun Demons defeated the Manitoba Bisons 94-78 to advance to the semi finals of the M.T.S. Mobility Wesmen Classic. The Sun Demons got off to a quick start scoring 54 first half points while shooting 50% from the field. The score at half-time was 54-28 for the Sun Demons. In the second half the Bisons closed the gap but Cariboo continued their hot shooting by connecting on 57% of their shots to help them cruise to the victory. Brent Traxel led the Sun Demons with 24 points while Tarik Tokar led the Bisons with 24 points also. The Sun Demons will now face the Winnipeg Wesmen in one semi final tomorrow night at 6:00 p.m.

The Sisler Spartans defeated the Garden City Fighting Gophers 88-59 in one high school consolation semi final at the M.T.S. Mobilty Wesmen Classic. The Spartans were never threatened in this match as they led 45-25 at half-time. Guard Jonar Huertas led the Spartans with 19 points while Rhotley Lozaga led the Fighting Gophers with a game high 21 points. Sisler will now face M.B.C.I in the high school consolation final tomorrow morning at 8:30 a.m.

A strong second half propelled the Universite du Quebec a Montreal Citadins to an impressive 79-64 victory over the Guelph Gryphons.  The Citadins scored 41 points while shooting 50% from the field in the second half to earn the victory. The game was tight at halftime as the Citadins led 38-35. Joseph Antangana led the Citadins with 13 points while Nick Pankerichan led the Gryphons with 19 points. The Citadins will face the winner of the Manitoba-Lakehead match in the consolation final tomorrow at 2:00 p.m.

The Lakehead Thunderwolves used a 37 point second half to come from behind and defeat the Manitoba Bisons 67-61. The Thunderwolves were down 38-30 at halftime. The game saw several lead changes but the Thunderwolves were able to hold off the Bisons for the victory. Kiraan Posey led the Thunderwolves with 18 points while guard Christopher Dyck led the Bisons with 25 points. The Thunderwolves will face Montreal in the consolation final tomorrow at 2:00 p.m.

The College Jeanne-Sauve Olympiens advanced the finals of the high school draw of the M.T.S. Mobility Wesmen Classic. The Olympiens defeated the Fort Richmond Centurions 82-68. The Olympiens were down by three at the half by a score of 41-38. In the second half the Olympiens outscored the Centurions 44-27 to cruise to the victory. Nick Lother scored 35 points for the Olympiens while Peter Lomuro and Grant Rayner scored 17 each for the Centurions. Jeanne-Sauve will face the Glenlawn Lions in the high school final tomorrow evening at 6:00 p.m.

The Winnipeg Wesmen are heading to the finals. The Wesmen earned a berth in the M.T.S. Mobility Wesmen Classic Championship with a 78-75 victory over the Cariboo Sun Demons. The Wesmen trailed by as much as 11 points with just over five minutes left, but the Wesmen scored 11 straight points to take the lead. The Sun Demons battled back to within one point but fifth year player Tony Richter made a clutch shot with six seconds left to give the Wesmen the victory. Guard Erfan Nasajpour led the Wesmen with 21 points and Brad Van Dolah scored 22 points for the Sun Demons. The Wesmen will now face the winner of the Alberta-Saskatchewan game in the championship game tomorrow night at 8:00 p.m.

The Saskatchewan Huskies will join the Winnipeg Wesmen in the finals of the M.T.S. Mobility Wesmen Classic. The Huskies earned the berth with a 90-77 victory over the Alberta Golden Bears. The Huskies despite shooting 64% from the field in the first half trailed 46-40 at half time. In the second half the Huskies continued their hot shooting by pouring in 50 points to lead them to victory. Kyle Grant led the Huskies with 28 points while Phil Sudol scored 18 points for the Golden Bears. The university championship final will take place tomorrow evening at 8:00 featuring the Winnipeg Wesmen and the Saskatchewan Huskies.

The Sisler Spartans defeated the M.B.C.I Hawks 95-59 in the high school consolation final at the M.T.S. Wesmen Classic. The Spartans had complete control in the first half as they built a 45-33 halftime lead. Kurtis Sansregret scored 28 points for the Spartans while player of the game, Stefan Bouw poured in 25 points for the Hawks.

The Centurions defeated the Oak Park Raiders 81-65 in the high school third place game at the M.T.S, Mobility Wesmen Classic. The Centurions ran away with the game in the second half after the score was tied at halftime at 41-41. Grant Rayner led the Centurions with 22 points while Mike Smalley contributed with 22 points for the Raiders.

The Guelph Gryphons relied on three pointers to defeat the Manitoba Bisons 81-75 in the university 7th place game at the M.T.S. Mobility Wesmen Classic. Guelph connected on 14 of 32 three point attempts to help them in the victory. The game was a close affair all along with both teams even at 41 at halftime. Eric Malcolm of the Gryphons connected for seven three pointers and was chosen the player of the game. Jeff Rosar led the Gryphons with 26 points while Christopher Dyck led the Bisons with 19 points. The Gryphons finish the Classic in seventh place and the Bisons finish in eighth position.

The University of Montreal came back in the second half to defeat the Lakehead Thunderwolves 76-74 in the university consolation final at the M.T.S. Mobility Wesmen Classic. Lakehead had a great first half in which they shot 54% from the field and held a 41-35 lead at halftime. In the second half the Thunderwolves could only connect on 29% from the field and that allowed the Citadins to come back for the win. Francois J. Yelle led the Citadins with 23 points while Kiraan Posey had 17 points for Lakehead.

The Alberta Golden Bears shot the lights out. The Golden Bears defeated Cariboo 106-84 in the university third place game at the M.T.S. Mobility Wesmen Classic. The Golden Bears connected on 60% of their shots from the field to bury the Sun Demons. Alberta had a 48-39 lead at halftime. Tyler Coston led the Golden Bears with a game high 32 points. Brad Van Dolah and Brent Traxel each had 15 points for the Sun Demons. The victory gives the Golden Bears third place in the classic.

The College Jeanne-Sauve Olympiens defeated the defending provincial champions, Glenlawn Lions 73-71 in the high school final of the M.T. S. Mobility Wesmen Classic. The game was entertaining that saw several lead changes for both teams. The Lions held a slim 34-33 lead at halftime. In the second half Dan Lother of the Olympiens sank three-three pointers to lead the Olympiens to the victory. Tournament all-stars  Dan Lother led the Olympiens with 24 points and Cam Hornby led the Lions with a game-high 27 points.

The Winnipeg Wesmen ended a ten year draught by winning the university final of the M.T.S. Mobility Wesmen Classic. The Wesmen defeated the Saskatchewan Huskies 83-78 in front of 1500 excited spectators to clinch the championship. Ryan Roper hit a three pointer with 27 seconds to break a 78-78 tie and Oliver Leslie sank two free throws to clinch the game. The first half was a close affair with the Huskies up 42-40 at halftime. Dan Shynkaryk led the Wesmen with 24 points while guard Erfan Nasajpour had a triple double scoring 21 points, grabbing 12 rebounds and assisting on 15. Andrew Spagrud led the Huskies with 19 points.
