Kelvin 75 Silver Heights 53

Clippers Down Huskies in Classic Opener

The Kelvin Clippers, currently #3 in the province and Wesmen Classic finalists in 2002, began their quest for this year’s title with 75-58 victory over the #4-ranked Silver Heights Huskies. Both teams seemed to come out somewhat tentative, with a number of missed shots and turnovers on both sides, but Kelvin settled down and pushed to a 36-20 lead at halftime. Despite a charge by Silver Heights in the second half, the Clippers proved too much for the Huskies, who move on to face the winner of Garden City and J.H. Bruns in the first semifinal on Sunday at 5:00 p.m. Damir Osmanovic led the way with 26 points for Kelvin, while James McGill chipped in 23 for Silver Heights. Osmanovic and McGill were also named as Players of the Game for their respective squads.

Game Two - 3:45 pm

Garden City 69 J.H. Bruns 65

Broncos Bucked By Gophers

In a hard-nosed, fast-paced affair at both ends of the court, the Garden City Fighting Gophers held off the J.H. Bruns Broncos by the score of 69-65. J.H. Bruns led 22-10 at one point in the first half, but Garden City stormed back to tie the game at 37 going into halftime. In the second half, Duckworth Centre fans were treated to a spectacle when Garden City forward Myron Dean blocked a shot, then ran the floor and finished the fast break with a thunderous two-handed slam. A pretty reverse layup by Dean, combined with a number of untimely Bronco fouls, sealed the deal for Garden City. Dean led all scorers with 30 points and was named Player of the Game for the Gophers, while Cyril Indome had 17 for J.H. Bruns in a losing cause. Garrett Anderson was the Player of the Game for the Broncos. Garden City moves on to face Kelvin in the first semifinal on Sunday at 5:00 pm.

Game 3 - 5:30 pm

Miles Mac 80 Garden Valley (Winkler) 65

Buckeyes Better Zodiacs

After a three-pointer by Diego Leoz Toboada got the Garden Valley Zodiacs within nine points with 4:28 left in the game, the Miles Mac Buckeyes went on an 8-0 run to head off the Zodiac rally, propelling the Buckeyes to an eventual 80-65 victory in High School Varsity Boys Basketball action at the 37th MTS Mobility Wesmen Classic on Saturday night.

The Buckeyes led 46-21 at the half and stretched the lead to 30 points early in the second frame, but Garden Valley clawed their way back into the contest before Miles Mac’s late spurt sealed the victory. Robert Tibbs had 20 points to lead the No. 9 ranked Buckeyes, while Ian Milne led all scorers with 31 points for No. 8 ranked Garden Valley. Miles Mac advances to Monday’s semi-final at 4:15 p.m. where they will meet the Oak Park Raiders

Game 4

Oak Park 75 Sisler 71

Raiders Slip Past Spartans

Cole Borland nailed a three-pointer to put the Oak Park Raiders up 69-63 with 2:21 left in the game, giving the No. 2 ranked Raiders the cushion they needed to hold off the Sisler Spartans and win their opening game of the MTS Mobility Wesmen Classic at the Duckworth Centre on Saturday night 75-71. Oak Park led 42-36 at the half but trailed the No. 10 ranked Spartans by as much as 10 midway through the final 20 minutes before returning to form and pulling away in the final few minutes. Oak Park got a game-high 31 points from Ryan Roper, while Sisler’s Steven Olivier-Job hit for 24 points - including 6 three-pointers. The Raiders advance to Monday’s semi-final where they take on the Miles Mac Buckeyes.
