Most Valuable Players: 12 year old boys University Men’s Section First Round 1:00 pm Queen’s Upset Dinos The Queen’s Golden Gael’s provided a surprise in the opening game of the University Men’s Section of the 37th MTS Mobility Wesmen Classic by upsetting tournament favourites, the Calgary Dinos 61-58. A drive to the hoop with five seconds left by fifth year Dino guard Aman Heran wouldn’t drop and the unranked Golden Gaels added a foul shot to escape with a win over the No. 3 ranked Dinos. Calgary was without leading scorer John Riad and fellow starter Surinder Grewal, both sidelined with injuries. Queen’s led 26-22 at the half and the two teams were within a few points of each other for the rest of the contest. Rookie guard Simon Mitchell led the way for the Golden Gaels, notching 14 points to go along with 4 rebounds and 3 steals. He was named Player of the Game for his efforts. Heran was tops for Calgary with 17 points and 5 assists and named Player of the Game for the Dinos. The Golden Gaels advance to Monday’s 8:00 p.m. Championship Semi-final against the winner of Brock and Lethbridge. University Men’s Section First Round 3:00 pm Stienstra powers Badgers to Victory The Brock Badgers broke open a tie game by going on a 14-2 run in the last four minutes to knock off the Lethbridge Pronghorns 77-65 in University Men’s MTS Mobility Wesmen Classic action at the Duckworth Centre on Sunday. Brock’s third year post Kevin Stienstra put an exclamation point on the game-ending run, finishing a drive with an emphatic dunk as the shot clock ran down. Stienstra led all scorers with 31 points, but also added 13 rebounds, 3 assists and 3 blocks, earning Player of the Game honours in the process. Scott Murray added 13 points for the Badgers. Brock led 42-33 at the half - but Lethbridge went on a 16-4 run in the first seven minutes of the final frame to pull ahead. The two teams traded runs until Brock rode their last push to victory. Lethbridge’s Player of the Game, Tim Whitehead had 21 points and on 10 of 12 shooting and added 8 rebounds as well. Brock next sees action on Monday at 8:00 p.m when they face Queen’s in one Championship Semi-Final. High School Varsity Boys Championship Semi-Final - 5:00 pm Gophers advance to final with win over Clippers In a battle of two of the top Varsity Boys Basketball teams in the province the Garden City Fighting Gophers came out on the better end of a 71-57 score, beating the Kelvin Clippers in a MTS Mobility Wesmen Classic High School Semi-Final played at the Duckworth Centre on Sunday. The Fighting Gophers took a 32-30 lead into the locker room at half-time and the score remained close until the final five minutes of the game when Garden City outscored the Clippers 22-8 down the stretch. Myron Dean was tops for the Fighting Gophers with 23 points while Player of the Game A.J. Monton added 16 pts. Buisi Okwumabua led Kelvin with 19 points. Garden City now advances to Tuesday night’s 6:15 p.m final. University Men’s Section First Round 6:30 pm Wesmen Slip Past Sea-Hawks A clutch three pointer and a pair of crucial free throws by Dave Brar late in the second half helped propel the University of Winnipeg Wesmen to a 63-60 victory over the Memorial Sea-Hawks in the first round of the MTS Mobility Wesmen Classic. Leading 32-24 at halftime, Winnipeg, who shot 44% from the field, led by as much as 12 points in the second half, but a number of Wesmen turnovers and some timely shooting by Memorial’s Jeff Saxby allowed the Sea-Hawks to keep it close. Mike Gomez had a solid game for the Wesmen with 18 points and 3 rebounds, while Brar added 15 points, including 3 of 5 from behind the arc. Saxby was the high scorer for Memorial with 14 points. With the victory, the Wesmen advance to the semifinal on Monday at 6:00 pm and will await the winner of Manitoba and Laurier. University Men’s Section First Round 8:30 pm Bisons Top Laurier, face Wesmen in semis Trailing by one at halftime, the University of Manitoba Bisons played a solid second half and emerged with a 68-62 victory over the Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks in the first round of the Wesmen Classic. Bison forward Tim Pershick led all scorers with 18 points and 7 rebounds, while guard Jordan Mason chipped in with 14 points and 5 rebounds. Andrew MacKay had a great night for the Golden Hawks, posting a double-double with 15 points and 16 rebounds in a losing cause. The win by the Bisons sets up an all-Manitoba semifinal, with Manitoba facing off against the Winnipeg Wesmen Monday night at 6 pm. |
