University Men’s Section Championship Semi-Final #1
Wesmen 64 Manitoba 59

Gomez caps comeback, sends Wesmen to Classic final

Wesmen guard Michael Gomez hit a pull-up jumper with 3:20 remaining in the game to give Winnipeg a lead they would not relinquish, as the Wesmen defeated the Manitoba Bisons 64-59 in the first Championship Semifinal of the MTS Mobility Wesmen Classic. In the first half, Winnipeg’s Dave Brar was on the receiving end of an elbow and was forced to leave the game. This seemed to throw off the Winnipeg’s rhythm, and some consistent shooting by Manitoba gave the Bisons a 34-20 lead going into halftime. In the second half, however, Winnipeg began to gain some momentum with some inspired play to trim the deficit. Gomez hit a big 3-pointer to give the Wesmen a 4 point lead and went 4 for 4 from the foul line down the stretch to put the game out of reach for the Bisons. He finished with 23 points and 12 rebounds, while Tony Richter contributed 13 points and 9 rebounds. Jordan Mason was the high scorer for Manitoba with 20 points. With the win, the Wesmen advance to the championship final Tuesday at 8 pm and will face the winner of Queens and Brock. Winnipeg is looking to win its first Classic title since 1994.
