Fort Richmond 68 Silver Heights 63
Fort Richmond’s Dele Legris hit a driving lay-up with 1:51 left in the game giving his team a 10 point lead and the cushion the Centurions needed for an eventual 68-63 win over the Silver Heights Huskies in High School Boys Championship semi-final action at the Duckworth Centre. Enis Jeina led the top ranked Centurions with 19 points while Legris and guard Ali Ahmadzai added 16. Ahamadzai’s total included four 3-pointers. A hard-working Husky squad had 19 points from Jared Boville and 16 - all in the second half- from Todd Christenson. Fort Richmond advances to Monday night’s final against the winner of tomorrow’s match-up between Kelvin and River East.

Calgary 51 Guelph 47

An alley-oop dunk by Chris Wright put Calgary up by 6 with three minutes to play in the game, and the Dinos kept the Guelph Gryphons in check the rest of the way for a 51-47 victory in the opening game of the Wesmen Classic played at the Duckworth Centre. The No. 8 Dinos got 17 points and 10 boards from Wright in the win. Guelph was led by Michael Ayanbedejo’s 20 points and 12 rebounds, while Radhi Knapp chipped in 10.

3:00 pm Alberta 84 Lakehead 62
A steady and sure Alberta Golden Bears team eventually wore down the Lakehead Thunderwolves to post an 84-62 victory in preliminary round University Men’s Basketball action at the Duckworth Centre. Alberta led 38-33 at the half before stretching their lead to double digits in the last 10 minutes of the game. Michael Melnychuk led the Golden Bears with 21 points and Phil Scherer chipped in 19 to go with his 8 rebounds. The Lakehead attack was led by Dan Zapior and Jeff Rosar with 17 and 14 points respectively. No. 8 Alberta now meets provincial rival No. 6 Calgary in tomorrow’s 8:00 pm Championship semi-final.

6:30 pm WESMEN 79 RMC 70
The Wesmen survived a scare from a gritty Royal Military College Paladin team to advance to the Championship semi-finals of the Wesmen Classic. Rookie guard Erfan Nasajpour hit his sixth 3-pointer of the game with under two minutes left, giving Winnipeg a six point lead it would not relinquish in the 79-70 win. The Wesmen led 35-31 at the half - but trailed the Paladins 65-64 with 4:47 left in the contest before going on a 15-5 run to end the game. Nasajpour led the Wesmen attack with 20 points with Dave Brar adding 15. RMC’s Kevin Dulude showed why he is one of the best players in the country by knocking down 35 points to go with 9 rebounds for the Paladins. Bayode Ajayi chipped in 23 for RMC as well.

8:30 pm Ottawa 80 Manitoba 57
An up tempo Ottawa Gee-Gee’s squad earned themselves a date with the hometown Winnipeg Wesmen in the Championship semi-final of the Wesmen Classic by handily beating the Manitoba Bisons 80-57. Ottawa was led by Alex McLeod and Curtis Shakespeare with 15 and 14 points respectively. Manitoba got 15 points from Jatinder Johal and 12 from Glenne Manlig in a losing cause. Ottawa faces Winnipeg at 6:00 pm Sunday with the winner advancing to Monday night’s final.
