BISONS TAKE ROUND ONE

In what most likely will be an indication of any game played between the Wesmen and Bison’s Women’s Basketball Teams this season, Manitoba needed a late basket to beat the Wesmen 65-63 in the opening game of the Converse Shootout Tournament at the Duckworth Centre. 2nd year guard Uzo Asagwara hit a short jumper in the paint to tie the score at 63-63 with just under a minute left, but Manitoba controlled the ball until 4th year guard Jayne Legal-Antoniuk nailed a jump shot with 6 seconds remaining, lifting the Bisons to victory. The score was tied 32-32 at the half and the two evenly matched teams traded baskets right up until the exciting end of the contest. 4th year forward JoAnne Wells had 27 points and 5 rebounds to lead the Wesmen, while 5th year guard Sally Kaznica pitched in with 8 points and 7 assists. Manitoba got 15 points from Lynda Guy and 12 from Anna Drewniak. The Wesmen are back in action on Saturday evening when they face Lakehead at 6:15 at the Duckworth Centre.

WESMEN THUMP THUNDERWOLVES

The Wesmen got their first win of the season in a convincing fashion by thumping the Lakehead Thunderwolves 78-52 in the Converse Shootout tournament played at the Duckworth Centre on Saturday night. Winnipeg jumped out to a 47-28 half time lead and never looked back in a contest where five Wesmen players scored in double digits. 2nd year guard Uzo Asagwara led the Winnipeg attack with 13 points while 3rd year forward Kate Daniels and 4th year guard JoAnne Wells added 12 more each. Robyn DeGray’s 11 points were tops for the Thunderwolves. The Wesmen finish off the four team round-robin tournament tomorrow at noon when they face the Regina Cougars.

WESMEN CORRAL COUGARS

5th year guard and tournament All-star Sally Kaznica nailed a three-pointer with 2:17 left, giving the Wesmen a seven point cushion and propelling the home team to a 64-53 victory over Canada West rivals the Regina Cougars in the Converse Shootout tournament Sunday afternoon at the Duckworth Centre. Winnipeg found itself in 12-2 hole to start the game but climbed back into the contest, evening things up at 30-30 at the half. In the second frame a consistent Wesmen attack eventually wore the Cougars down.

4th year forward and tournament All-star JoAnne Wells had 19 points to lead the Wesmen, while 3rd year forward Kate Daniels added 14 points and 8 rebounds. Daniels was named Defensive Player of the Tournament for her efforts. 5th year guard Cymone Bouchard had 18 points for Regina and picked up the tournament MVP award as well.
