Men’s Basketball Midway Chrysler Invitational Tournament Day One Wesmen 77 McGill 57 WESMEN WAX MCGILL Winnipeg, Mb - A three-pointer by rookie Matt Opalko at 10:12 of the second half capped a 13-4 run, giving the Wesmen a 14 point lead and putting them in the driver’s seat in an eventual 77-57 win over the McGill Redmen in the opening game of the Midway Chrysler Invitational Tournament played at the Duckworth Centre on Friday night. Winnipeg led 30-25 in a sluggish first half for both teams, but first year point guard Marlon Richards’ spirited play off the bench in the second frame ignited the Winnipeg fast break, enabling them to pull away from the Redmen. Both fourth year post Tony Richter and third year forward Michael Gomez had double-doubles, with Richter picking up 18 points and 11 rebounds and Gomez adding 14 points to go along with 13 boards to lead the Wesmen. Derek Armstrong’s 14 points and 7 rebounds were tops for McGill. The Wesmen return to the court on Saturday night when they entertain the University of Mary at 6:15. Midway Chrysler Invitational Day Two University of Mary 79 Wesmen 58 WESMEN CAN’T MATCH MARY Winnipeg, Mb -The Wesmen got themselves into trouble early on and never recovered in a 79-58 defeat at the hands of the University of Mary Marauders in the Midway Chrysler Invitational Tournament at the Duckworth Centre on Saturday night. Mary, an NAIA school from Bismark, North Dakota, jumped out to a 21-1 lead and never looked back in the one-sided contest. Mary led 45-17 at the half and then cruised through the final 20 minutes for the victory. Anish Sharda and Alex Aldinger had 15 points each to lead the Mauraders. Fourth year forward Tony Richter was tops for the Wesmen with 15 points and 9 rebounds, while fourth year wing Tosin Opanubi added 13 points. Winnipeg finishes the Midway Chrysler Invitational with a 1-1 record while Mary went undefeated over two games. The Wesmen next see action at the Manitoba Invitational Tournament Oct.31 to Nov. 1st.
