WESMEN WAX MCGILL
Winnipeg, Mb - A three-pointer by rookie Matt Opalko at 10:12 of the second half capped a 13-4 run, giving the Wesmen a 14 point lead and putting them in the driver’s seat in an eventual 77-57 win over the McGill Redmen in the opening game of the Midway Chrysler Invitational Tournament played at the Duckworth Centre on Friday night. Winnipeg led 30-25 in a sluggish first half for both teams, but first year point guard Marlon Richards’ spirited play off the bench in the second frame ignited the Winnipeg fast break, enabling them to pull away from the Redmen. Both fourth year post Tony Richter and third year forward Michael Gomez had double-doubles, with Richter picking up 18 points and 11 rebounds and Gomez adding 14 points to go along with 13 boards to lead the Wesmen. Derek Armstrong’s 14 points and 7 rebounds were tops for McGill. The Wesmen return to the court on Saturday night when they entertain the University of Mary at 6:15.
