Heather Thompson, Suk Singh named The University of Winnipeg is very pleased to announce that Basketball Players Heather Thompson and Sukhvir Singh are the 2001-2002 University of Winnipeg Athletes of the Year. Heather Thompson is a 3rd year Athlete out of Oak Park High School. This past year Heather was named as a 2nd Team All-Canadian, a 1st Team Canada West All-Star. Majoring in Justice and Law Enforcement she is also now a 2 time Academic All-Canadian. Heather led the team in scoring(14 ppg), rebounds (11 rpg) and steals (4 spg) and was named as a University of Winnipeg Athlete of the Week 5 times. Women's Basketball Coach Tanya McKay comments that "Heather is a very talented athlete who can dominate a game at both ends of the court. Her rebounding and defensive abilities already make her one of Canada's premiere players. She was definitely one of the reasons for our success." The University of Winnipeg Male Athlete of the Year Sukhvir Singh is in his 5th and final year and came to the Wesmen from Kelvin High School. He will graduate with a degree in Justice and Law enforcement. Suk repeats his win as Athlete of the Year from last year. Canada West named him as a 1st Team All-Star to go along with All-Star honours at the Midway Chrysler and Wesmen Classic tournaments. He led the Wesmen in scoring with a 16.3 point per game average, led Canada West in assists with 7 per game and was 2rd overall in Canada West for free throw percentage at 87.4%. Men's Basketball Coach Dave Crook comments that "Suk was a great leader for our team. He is like having a coach on the floor.
