Hamilton, ON - In the Bronze Medal game at the 2002 CIS
Women's Basketball Championship at McMaster University, the
#5 seeded Winnipeg Wesmen defeated the #3 ranked Regina
Cougars by a score of 64-47. The win marks the tenth
medal for the Wesmen at the Championship, their first since
1995.
Winnipeg was first off the mark, scoring the game's first six points. From there, there was no lead larger than six points, until the Wesmen pulled ahead 23-16 with 5:40 to play in the opening 20 minutes, as part of a 20-4 run to close the half. They led 37-20 at the intermission, thanks in large part to JoAnne Wells (Bedford, NS), who scored 14 points and grabbed seven rebounds off the bench. Regina turned the ball over 17 times in the half, leading to 17 Winnipeg points. Neither team could get untracked early in the second half, with each team scoring only seven points in the first nine minutes. Regina finally hit a couple of long-range shots, but every time they looked like they would make a run, the Wesmen answered. The Cougars didn't get closer than 11 points down the stretch. Wells led Winnipeg with 23 points and 12 rebounds. Brooke Bender (Winnipeg, MB), playing in her final CIS game, scored 10 points and added six rebounds, while Heather Thompson (Winnipeg, MB) had eight points and seven rebounds. "It's always nice to win your last game," said Wesmen Coach Tanya McKay. "It's too bad it wasn't tomorrow (the Gold Medal Game), but everyone stepped up today, and played hard. We've stressed tough defense all year, and in the first half, it led to a lot of transition points." Bree Burgess (Regina, SK), also a fifth year senior, had a strong final CIS game, leading the Cougars with 16 points and 12 rebounds. Phoebe De Cimon (Regina, SK) had 10 points and seven rebounds, while Jana Schweitzer (Regina, SK) added nine points and seven boards. Regina struggled from beyond the arc. After connecting on 6-for-13 from three-point range in their opening round game, the Cougars went 5-for-37 in their last two games, both losses. Wells and Burgess were selected as Saxon Players of the Game. For more information on the 2002 CIS Women's Basketball Championship, please visit www.universitysport.ca or www.nationals.ca |
