WESMEN BEAT UP ON BOBCATS

WINNIPEG, Mb - JoAnne Wells made a driving lay-up at 15:03 of the second half, capping a 12-4 run to start the final 20 minutes, and giving the Wesmen a 20 point lead in an eventual 60-42 win over the Brandon Bobcats in the opening game of the Pepsi Invitational Tournament at the Duckworth Centre on Friday night. No. 3 ranked Winnipeg led 31-19 at the half before turning the heat up to start the second frame. Fourth year post Heather Thompson had 13 points and 5 rebounds to lead the Wesmen, while fifth year point guard Sally Kaznica chipped in with 11 points. Semra Ilhan was tops for the Bobcats with 14 points. The Wesmen return to the floor on Saturday night at 6:15 p.m. when they take on the McMaster Marauders.

WESMEN MASTER MCMASTER

WINNIPEG, Mb - The No. 3 ranked Wesmen won their second game of the Pepsi Invitational Tournament by knocking off the McMaster Marauders 71-55 at the Duckworth Centre on Saturday night. Winnipeg coach Tanya McKay used all her players in the 16-point victory where the Wesmen led 43-25 at the half. Fifth year forward Janet Wells fuelled the Wesmen attack with 16 points and 7 rebounds, while sister JoAnne added 14 points and 3 boards. Sarah Stirling had 14 points to lead McMaster. Winnipeg plays its final game of the Pepsi Invitational on Sunday at noon when they face the University of Toronto Varsity Blues.

WESMEN TRAMPLE TORONTO

WINNIPEG, Mb - The Wesmen rolled to their third consecutive dominant victory, capturing the Pepsi Invitational Tournament with a 75-53 win over the Toronto Varsity Blues at the Duckworth Centre on Sunday afternoon. An Uzo Asagwara three-pointer at 11:04 of the first half finished a 22-4 run to start the game and the Wesmen never looked back from there. Fourth year guard JoAnne Well’s 20 points were tops for Winnipeg, while tournament MVP fifth year guard Sally Kaznica added 11 points and 4 assists. JoAnne Wells was also named an All-star, and sister Janet picked up defensive player of the tournament honours.

The No. 3 ranked Wesmen end their pre-season with an 8-1 record and take an eight game winning streak into their opening weekend of Canada West Conference play against Trinity Western and No. 2 ranked Simon Fraser at the Duckworth Centre on Friday Nov. 8th and Saturday Nov. 9th.
