Culminating in an exciting finale to a three-game Women’s Basketball playoff series on February 16th, the University of Winnipeg has set an all-time attendance record for the Duckworth Centre. Over 50,000 people attended basketball and volleyball games this season, 10,000 more than last year. University of Winnipeg Athletic Director Bill Wedlake was honoured at the inaugural Pembina Trails Classic Varsity Boys Basketball Tournament on the weekend. The High School tournament replaces the Fort Garry Invitational after the Assiniboine South and Fort Garry School Divisions merged earlier this year. Wedlake is the first recipient of the Pembina Trails Classic Builder’s Award. The former University of Winnipeg Men’s Basketball coach was recognized for his contributions to the basketball community in Manitoba as a player, high school coach, university coach and now as Athletic Director at the U of W. Wedlake was presented with a Builder’s plaque, a commemorative glass etching and performed the ceremonial tip-off at Saturday night’s championship game.
University of Winnipeg Women’s Hockey
The University of Winnipeg Women’s Hockey Team went 2-1 in a three-game series with the Thunder Bay Comets in Thunder Bay on January 24th and 25th . Winnipeg won the first contest 5-2, dropped the next one 4-1, but rebounded to take the final match-up 5-2 by another 5-2 margin.

The third-year middle hitter is the second leading scorer in the CIS with a 5.02 points a set average. She is also seventh in kills with 3.62 a set.

The fourth-year opposite side hitter is eight in the CIS in kills with 3.46 a set. Ens also holds down the 13th spot in the country in scoring with 4.00 points per set.

Over 240 people were on hand as Master of Ceremonies Tania Hlohovsky from A-Channel and Keynote Speaker Deb Bilinsky from DCB Group (Professional Sports Production for NHL, MLB and NBA teams) helped raise scholarship dollars for female athletes as they Celebrated "Women in Sport". |

ASAGWARA NAMED CANADA WEST ATHLETE OF THE WEEK (Nov 26)
Uzo Asagwara (St. Norbert, MB) Winnipeg Wesmen, Basketball
Wesmen guard Uzo Asagwara had herself quite a game on Friday November 22nd at the Duckworth Centre. The first-year player had 37 points, including five three-pointers in a 91-86 win over the No. 4 ranked Regina Cougars. In the process she set a Canada West Women's Basketball rookie record for points in a game. Uzo shot 15 for 21 from the field in 26 minutes of playing time for the No. 1 ranked Wesmen. She is vital cog in a highly skilled, well coached Winnipeg team who are 16-0 overall. Uzo currently occupies the number 11 spot for scoring in Canada West with 11.8 points per game. Her 1.83 three-pointers a contest is 8th best in the Conference. Uzo was the 2001-02 AAA Provincial Girls Basketball Player of the Year after staring for St. Norbert Collegiate, in St. Norbert, Manitoba. (release from Canada West)

The University of Winnipeg is now the permanent home of the Manitoba Basketball Hall of Fame. On Friday night Oct. 25th, between games of the Midway Chrysler Invitational Tournament, four members of the 1950 and 1951 Junior National Champion Winnipeg Stellars took part in a ribbon cutting ceremony to officially open the site on the second floor concourse of the Duckworth Centre. The ten remaining Stellars players also presented a donation of $1000 to Hall of Fame Chairman Vic Pruden.

WESMEN ROCKED! -All four Wesmen athletic teams participated in the U of W’s annual rock climb on a sunny fall afternoon at the downtown campus this past Friday. Unfortunately the sports teams finished well back of the winners. In the High School Boys Volleyball tournament held at the Duckworth Centre over the weekend, the River East Kodiaks triumphed over the Mennonite Brethren Hawks in the final. 20 teams and over 300 athletes participated in the successful event. This upcoming weekend the rural boys teams get their turn with 20 teams taking part at the Duckworth Centre.
In the 6th Annual Perimeter Plus Wesmen Invitational High School Boy’s Volleyball Tournament on the weekend the Glenboro Panthers picked up the championship trophy in a close match over the St. Norbert Titans at the Duckworth Centre. Twenty teams participated with over 300 players, friends and families from all over rural Manitoba.
Surprise Contest Results - Congratulations to Aaron Rosenberg, Andrew Mead, Brian Morris and Toby Hughes who correctly answered the web trivia contest. They will all receive 1 free season ticket to all Wesmen events for the 2002-2003 season. The trivia question was - How many National Championships have the WESMEN won? The correct answer, as one of the contestants put it, was "The Wesmen have won an astounding nineteen (19) National Championships". No University in the country has won as many National Championships as the Wesmen. Congratulations again to the winners and look for future contests within the pages of our website.
The 2002 annual High School Girls Volleyball Tournament was also held this past weekend with a total of 20 teams and over 300 athletes participating. Crocus Plains (Brandon) defeated Lord Selkirk in the main event. Diane Scott and her Women's Volleyball Team members hosted another great event.

Also from the Men's Volleyball Team, setter Ryan Henley is playing with the National Senior A2 team this summer. They played here in Winnipeg against Australia on July 5, 6 and 7.
