JoAnne Wells and Stephen Ens named University of Winnipeg Athletes of the Year
Winnipeg, March 25 The University of Winnipeg is pleased to announce basketball star JoAnne Wells and volleyball stand-out Stephen Ens are the University of Winnipeg Athletes of the Year for 2003-04. It is the second consecutive season both players have received the honour.

UBC THUNDERBIRDS ARE NATIONAL CHAMPIONS
Winnipeg (CIS) For the first time in 30 years, the University of British Columbia Thunderbirds are national women’s basketball champions. The No. 2-seeded Thunderbirds defeated No. 1 University of Regina Cougars 60-53 in Sunday’s Canadian Interuniversity Sport Women’s Basketball Championship gold-medal game.UBC last won the title in 1974, coincidentally in Winnipeg. The last time the Thunderbirds took home a medal from nationals was a silver in 1975. Read more

REGINA COUGARS GOING FOR GOLD
Winnipeg (CIS) - The No. 1-seeded University of Regina Cougars are heading to the gold-medal game at the Canadian Interuniversity Women's Basketball Championship after disposing of the host No. 4 Winnipeg Wesmen 90-77 in Saturday's semifinal. The Canada West Conference champion Cougars were dropping shots from the outset of their game against Winnipeg, mounting a 42-27 lead at halftime. The gap stretched to 24 points in the second half and the closest Winnipeg got was 85-75 with 1:07 left.

WESMEN EARN DATE IN SEMI-FINALS
Winnipeg (CIS) - The No. 4-seeded University of Winnipeg Wesmen rode the performance of their veteran players to a 70-62 victory over the No.5-ranked Bishop's Gaiters in the third quarter-final at the Canadian Interuniversity Sport Women's Basketball Championships on Friday. The Wesmen advance to Saturday's 6:00 p.m. (CST) semifinal against Regina in what will be an exciting matchup. Both teams have been number one in the nation this year. Read more

On Sunday January 18th, night the Wesmen Women’s Basketball Team was honoured as a finalist for the Maurice Smith Memorial Trophy, an award given to the Manitoba Team of the Year, chosen by the Manitoba Sportswriters and Sportscasters Association.
Wesmen Men’s basketball player Tim McDowell is this year’s recipient of the Alumni Family Achievement Scholarship. The $2000 scholarship is provided by the University of Winnipeg Alumni Association and is awarded to the student who best combines excellence in the classroom with community service.
All four Wesmen teams were represented in the 32nd annual Rock Climb at the University of Winnipeg on September 15th. Wesmen Athletic Director Bill Wedlake emceed the event, as 15 teams scaled the 21 tonne rock, dedicated to the University for its 100th anniversary in 1967, in a bid for the fastest time. The team from the U of W student newspaper the Uniter took home top honours with a time of 15 seconds. Wesmen basketball rookies, Matthew Opalko, Will Bergmann and Mo Williams had their effort immortalized with a picture in the Saturday Winnipeg Free Press.
