WESMEN SNAP LOSING STREAK WITH WIN OVER COUGARS

Relief. Is what Wesmen coach Dave Crook must be feeling as the Winnipeg Wesmen picked up their first victory of the regular season with an impressive 86-75 victory over the Regina Cougars in front of 600 spectators at the Duckworth Centre Friday night. The team started strong as they raced out to a quick start as Dan Shynkaryk scored six straight points to give the Wesmen a 6-0 lead before the game was two minutes old. At the midway point of the first half the Cougars cut the Wesmen lead to 20-16 but the Wesmen did not quit as they shot 52% from the field in the first half and led at halftime 38-34. Shynkaryk was a dominant force in the first half as he was 8-for-11 shooting and had 16 points at the half. In the second half the Wesmen struggled with their shooting but they were able to keep the Cougars at bay and hang on for an 86-75 victory.

Second year guard Erfan Nasajpour was good on his word as he “guaranteed a victory” and he was true to his word. Nasajpour who finished the game with 15 points,15 rebounds and 10 assists is very optimistic about the team. “Tonight was the first win of the season but not the last”, said Nasajpour, who also” guaranteed another victory tomorrow night” against the same Cougars. Dan Shynkaryk led the Wesmen with 27 points while Matt Opalko scored 18 including 3-three pointers. Tai Tuisamoa who had 20 points led the Regina Cougars. The two teams will face each other Saturday evening at the Duckworth Centre. Game time is 7:30 p.m.
