WESMEN ROLL OVER RIVAL BISONS
The Winnipeg Wesmen like nothing better in life than to defeat their cross-town rivals from the University of Manitoba. On Wednesday evening the Wesmen defeated the Bisons 84-67 in front of 1750 excited spectators at the Duckworth Centre. The “dynamic duo” of JoAnne Wells and Uzo Asagwara were too much for the Bisons to handle as they together shot an amazing 23 out of 36 from the field and scored 30 and 26 points respectively. “The two of them were phenomenal this evening”,said head coach Tanya McKay. “They each play on opposite sides so teams do not know who to double team”,said McKay. In the first half the Wesmen started slow as the Bison’s roared out of the gate to a quick 6-0 lead. As they have done all season the switch went off as the Wesmen got a big three point basket from JoAnne Wells to even the score and they were on their way to a demanding 46-27 lead at halftime. The Wesmen shot 53% in the first half as they also held the Bison’s to 30% shooting from the field. In the second half the Bison’s tried to claw their way back into the game but the Wesmen defense stood their ground to preserve the victory for the Wesmen. The Wesmen defense was led by Heather Thompson who had a game high 14 rebounds. The Wesmen now sport a perfect 3-0 record in the 2004-2005 Canada West regular season standings. The team will battle the Bisons on Friday at the University of Manitoba.

SLOW START HURT WESMEN IN LOSS TO BISONS
If the Winnipeg Wesmen had their way they would love to get on the court and start this game over again. A slow starting first half which saw the Wesmen score only 17 points and shoot a horrific 19% was the story as they fell 65-62 to the University of Manitoba Bisons in front of 2000 spectators at the Duckworth Centre on Wednesday night. The Wesmen fell behind early as the Bisons jumped out to a 24-2 lead before the game was seven minutes old. “ You are not going to win many games when you fall behind 22 points” said head coach Dave Crook. “ The Bisons played the way they wanted too”, said Crook. The Wesmen were missing shots from in close, behind the three- point arc as nothing went right in the first half. The score at halftime was 33-17 for the Bisons. In thesecond half the Wesmen came out and played the way they are capable of shooting a respectable 44% from the field in the half and also going 12-for-12 at the free throw line in the half. Despite scoring 45 points in the second half the margin was too much to overtake the Bisons and after battling back the Wesmen fell to the Bisons. The leading scorer for the Wesmen was guard Erfan Nasajpour with 18 points while forward Dan Shynkaryk scored 16 points in the loss. The game was the regular season opener for the Wesmen who will get a chance at revenge as they take on the Bisons on Friday night at the University of Manitoba
