WESMEN DOMINATING IN VICTORY OVER HUSKIES

The Winnipeg Wesmen extended their unbeaten streak to five games with an impressive 3-0 victory against the University of Saskatchewan Huskies Friday night in front of 800 spectators at the Duckworth Centre. The Wesmen got a dominating performance from fifth year player Andrea Charbonneau who led the Wesmen with 12 kills and four blocks. The Wesmen were dominant from the first set as they raced out to a quick 9-3 lead and never looked back as they took the first set 25-19. In the second set the Wesmen train could not be derailed as they got stronger and stronger and never looked back. Nicola Dirks had a strong set with timely kills and excellent serves to keep the Huskies off balance. In the end the Wesmen took the second set 25-16. In the third set it was time to bury the Huskies and the Wesmen did as they dominated the third set by a score of 25-13. Jocelyne Roy had another outstanding defensive game as she had a team high 13 digs in the match. The Huskies were led by Carla Thoner who had seven kills in the match. The Wesmen now have a record of 5-2 and will look to improve on that as they face the Huskies tomorrow afternoon at 1:00 p.m. at the Duckworth Centre.

WESMEN WIN BATTLE AGAINST HUSKIES

The Wesmen were down but never gave up. The Winnipeg Wesmen came back from a 2-1 defecit to defeat the third ranked University of Saskatchewan Huskies 3-2 at the Duckworth Centre Friday night. The match was a battle from the first set which saw the Huskies win 31-29. In the second set the Wesmen played with confidence as they took the second set 25-22 to even the match. The third set was one the Wesmen should have won, the team had numerous chances to take the set but a few errors gave the Huskies the set and a 2-1 lead. In the fourth set the Wesmen showed what they are made of as they got several key kills from Ben Schellenberg, Martin Rochon and Jarrod Small which allowed the team to take the set 25-17 and even the match at 2-2. The Wesmen in the fifth and deciding set were down early but with the score 14-13 for the Huskies Paul Kjos and Jarrod Small came up with a big block to even the score at 14-14. The Wesmen then battled their way to the last two points and took the set 16-14 and the match 3-2. Ben Schellenberg led the Wesmen attack with 19 kills and 10 digs. The duo of Ryan Bevan and Jarrod Small had four blocks each. Mark Dodds led the Huskies with 26 kills while Eric Green contributed with 15 digs. The two teams will face each other tomorrow afternoon at 3:00 at the Duckworth Centre

The Wesmen remain perfect on the 2004-2005 as they defeated the University of Saskatchewan Huskies 74-59 in Saskatoon. JoAnne Wells led the Wesmen with 19 points while Sarah Crooks had 20 points for the Huskies. The Wesmen will take their perfect 5-0 record to Edmonton as they will face the University of Alberta on Sunday afternoon.

The Wesmen men’s basketball team started a two game road trip with a 101-90 loss to the University of Saskatchewan Huskies Friday night in Saskatoon. Dan Shynkaryk had 24 points for the Wesmen while Erfan Nasajpour made his return from injury by scoring 18 points. The team is now 0-3 and will head to Edmonton to take on the University of Alberta on Sunday afternoon.

WESMEN UNBEATEN IN SIX WITH VICTORY OVER HUSKIES

The Winnipeg Wesmen are hot. The Wesmen extended their unbeaten streak to six with a 3-0 victory over the University of Saskatchewan Huskies in front of 500 spectators at the Duckworth Centre on Saturday afternoon. The Huskies gave the Wesmen all they could handle in the first set but Aynsley Laluk had four kills in the set to help give the Wesmen a 25-21 first set win. In the second set the Huskies took advantage of some mistakes made by the Wesmen and were even in the lead 10-7 at one point. The Wesmen overcame their mistakes and got key points from the trio of Andrea Charbonneau, Jocelyne Roy and Laluk to take the second set 25-21. In the third set coach Diane Scott went to her bench and got several key defensive plays from Manon Paquin as the Wesmen overpowered the Huskies to take the third set 25-22. Andrea Charbonneau was a force this afternoon as she had 16 kills and 9 digs to lead the Wesmen. Stephanie Wheler led the Huskies with 13 kills in the match. The Wesmen now have a record of 6-2 and will next see action on Friday night as they battle the University of Regina at the Duckworth Centre.

WESMEN FALL TO HUSKIES TO SPLIT SERIES

The Winnipeg Wesmen came into the game looking for a sweep. The University of Saskatchewan Huskies avoided that scenario by defeating the Wesmen 3-1 Saturday afternoon at the Duckworth Centre. The first two sets were back and fourth battles that saw the Huskies take both sets by identical scores of 27-25. In the third set the Wesmen took advantage of six service errors by the Huskies and strong play from the front line to take the set 25-19 and trail in the match 2-1. In set number four the Wesmen simply ran out of gas as the Huskies pounded their way to a 25-17 set win and the match 3-1. Ben Schellenberg once again led the Wesmen with 13 kills while Marc De Spiegelaere had a strong defensive game coming up with 11 digs. Kris Brand led the Huskies with 17 kills while Eric Green had 13 digs for the Huskies. The Wesmen now have a record of 2-4 and will face the University of Regina on Friday evening at the Duckworth Centre.

The Winnipeg Wesmen remained undefeated as they beat the University of Alberta Pandas 73-59 Sunday afternoon at the University of Alberta. JoAnne Wells led the team with 25 points while Uzo Asagwara contributed 22 points. The leading scorer for the Pandas was Lauren Colborne with 11 points.
