WESMEN MAUL BOBCATS TO REMAIN PERFECT

The Winnipeg Wesmen showed just how dangerous of a team they are. The team, playing without fifth year players JoAnne Wells and Heather Thompson defeated the winless Brandon Bobcats 75-42 in front of 2000 loud and charged up fans at the Duckworth Centre Thursday evening. The Wesmen got a total team effort to make up for the loss of Wells and Thompson who were sitting the game out resting minor injuries. In the first half fourth year forward Kate Daniels took the team on her shoulders and carried the Wesmen to a 39-17 halftime lead. Daniels had 12 points and 7 rebounds in the first half alone. As the Wesmen have done all season they used a stifling defense to keep the Bobcats to only 30% shooting from the field. In the second half the Wesmen train continued to roll as they scored 36 second half points and held the Bobcats to only 25 points as they cruised to the victory. The victory gives the Wesmen a perfect 7-0 record so far in the 2004-2005 regular season. Kate Daniels led the Wesmen parade scoring 17 points and grabbing 8 rebounds, which impressed head coach Tanya McKay,” Kate played great tonight, it was great to see her play like that”, said McKay. Danielle Cote who scored eight points led the Bobcats. The Wesmen and Bobcats will do battle on Saturday in Brandon.

WESMEN ROLL PAST COUGARS FOR SEVENTH WIN IN A ROW

If it is not broken don’t fix it. The saying is true for the Winnipeg Wesmen starting unit as they once again paved the way to a 3-0 victory over the Regina Cougars in front of 1000 spectators at the Duckworth Centre on Friday night. The starting unit of Andrea Charbonneau, Kristin Brisebois, Jocelyne Roy, Christa Desrochers, Aynsley Laluk and Nicola Dirks once again dominated the Cougars to give the Wesmen their seventh win in a row. “ We all know our roles and are all maturing, basically we are all stepping up”, said Jocelyne Roy. In the first set the Wesmen jumped out to a quick 4-1 lead and led 8-5 at the first technical timeout. The powerful duo of Aynsley Laluk and Andrea Charbonneau were too much for the Cougars to handle in the first set as the Wesmen simply dominated winning 25-17. In the second set the Cougars made some adjustments on defense and even had the lead on the several occasions, but the Wesmen veterans came thru with timely kills and great defensive blocks by Kristin Brisebois and Nicola Dirks to win the set 25-20 and hold a commanding 2-0 lead. In set number three the team continued their domination as they once again outplayed the Cougars and rolled to a decisive 25-20 set win and a 3-0 match victory. The victory for the Wesmen is the third match in a row they swept their opponents in three straight games. Jocelyne Roy was a force for the Wesmen as she had 13 kills and Andrea Charbonneau had a great defensive game coming up with 15 digs. Karilee Holland led the Cougars with 9 kills and Kelly Cowan came up with 10 defensive digs. The Wesmen now sport a record of 7-2 and hope to make it 8-2 after tomorrow's match. After tomorrow they wont see action until January when they travel to Simon Fraser.

All they needed was a win. The Winnipeg Wesmen boosted their confidence this evening with an impressive 3-0 victory over the Regina Cougars in front of 1000 excited spectators at the Duckworth Centre on Friday evening. The Wesmen had several players step up this match, as Ben Schellenberg did not play due to illness. “ We had a lot of our young guys playing today and it was good to see them play well”, said fourth year player Jarrod Small. The first set was a back and fourth affair as both teams battled hard for critical points that were hard to come by. The team got points went they had to and came up with a 25-22 first set win. In the second set the Wesmen got solid defensive play from Ryan Bevan who had two key blocks to propel the team to a 25-20 second set victory and a 2-0 match lead. In the third set coach Larry McKay went to his bench and received a great effort from first year player Guy LaFleur who had four kills in the set.
