WESMEN ROMP PAST COUGARS IN SEASON OPENER
The Winnipeg Wesmen Women’s basketball team opened up the 2004-2005 regular season in style. The Wesmen dominated from the opening tip-off and cruised to a 64-34 thrashing of the University of Regina Cougars in front of 600 rowdy spectators at the Duckworth Centre Friday night. The Wesmen led right from the start jumping out to a quick 12 point lead early in the first half. Uzo Asagwara was a force all night and contributed 12 points in the first half alone. The Wesmen received a scare early in the game as fifth year player and all-Canadian JoAnne Wells injured her knee and was helped off the court. The good news for the Wesmen and their fans is that she did return and put in nine points in the first half. Despite shooting 30% from the field the Wesmen led 34-16 at the half. In the second half the Wesmen got key blocks and strong defense to hold the Cougars to 25% shooting in the second half. The Wesmen outscored the Cougars 30-18 in the half to cruise to the season opening win. The victory put a smile on coach Tanya McKay’s face and she was pleased with the win. “ I am very happy with the outcome, it is a huge win to open up the season”, said McKay. Uzo Asagwara led the Wesmen with 16 points, while JoAnne Wells put in 14 points. Heather Thompson was a force under the boards grabbing a game high 13 rebounds. The two teams will meet each other Saturday evening at 7:30 p.m. at the Duckworth Centre.
