WESMEN CROWN “ROYALS” TO OPEN UP MIDWAY WITH VICTORY

WINNIPEG, MB - The Winnipeg Wesmen were a focused and hungry team as they opened up Midway Chrysler Invitational with an impressive 72-58 victory against the Douglas College Royals Friday night at the Duckworth Centre.

The Wesmen fell behind 9-0 early in the game, but a focused and determined Wesmen team stormed back with 16 straight points which carried them to a 42-23 lead at the half. In the second half the Wesmen used strong defense to hold off the Royals and cruise to the victory. Guard Erfan Nasajpour led the Wesmen with 15 points, including three 3 pointers. Tony Richter and Dan Shynkaryk each had a strong game as they each scored 12 points.

The Wesmen Player of the Game was guard Erfan Nasajpour who along with his game-high 15 points also had a game-high 11 rebounds.

WESMEN RIDE THE WAVE TO DOWN CASCADES AT MIDWAY INVITATIONAL

WINNIPEG, MB - The Winnipeg Wesmen continued where they left off from last night as they defeated the Fraser Valley Cascades 88-71 in front of 1300 spectators at the Duckworth Centre in their second game at the Midway Chrysler Invitational Saturday night.

The Wesmen continued to come up with key baskets and solid defensive play in the victory. The key to the first half was 6 three pointers which carried the Wesmen to an impressive 49-33 lead at half time. In the second half the Wesmen used solid defense to hold the Cascades to 35% shooting from the field. Guard Matt Opalko had a solid game as he led the Wesmen with 21 points and also grabbed seven rebounds in the victory. Erfan Nasajpour had another solid game as he poured in 18 points for the Wesmen.

The victory gives the Wesmen a perfect 2-0 record and the tournament Championship. Matt Opalko was named the Wesmen Player of the Game for his efforts.
