WESMEN SAIL PAST HAWKS

WINNIPEG, Mb - As the saying goes “it is not how you start but how you finish” the Winnipeg Wesmen Women’s basketball team proved that point Friday night. The Wesmen started slowly but caught fire in the second half as they defeated the Memorial University Sea-Hawks 76-65 at the Duckworth Centre. The Wesmen started slowly as they missed easy baskets, turned the ball over and watched as the Sea-Hawks drained 3-three pointers in the first ten minutes and saw the Hawks jump out to a quick 16-9 lead over the Wesmen. After a timeout the Wesmen caught fire and scored eight straight points to take the lead and eventually lead 34-33 at halftime. In the second half the Wesmen got key defensive plays from Uzo Asagwara, as she blocked three shots and played tight defense. On the offensive side JoAnne Wells had 14 points in the second half alone and she was the Wesmen top scorer with 26 points as they came away with the victory. Uzo Asagwara contributed with 18 points for the Wesmen.
