SLOW START HURTS WESMEN IN LOSS TO VIKES

The story this game was one that is all too familiar this season. The Wesmen got off to a bad start and could not recover, as they were defeated 73-67 by the number eight ranked Victoria Vikes Friday evening in front of 1400 spectators at the Duckworth Centre. The Wesmen ran into a hot shooting Vikes team in the first half as Victoria connected on 56% of their shots from the field on their way to a 36-30 halftime lead. The Wesmen did not have a bad half as they shot a respectable 47% from the field but they did not visit the free throw line at all in the opening half. The Vikes were able to hold Erfan Nasajpour to only four points in the first half. The Wesmen in the second half were able to close the gap on several occasions but the Vikes would match the Wesmen basket for basket on their way to the victory. The Wesmen who for most part are a pretty good three point shooting team went ice cold this game, as they were 1-of-14 from three-point territory. Dan Shynkaryk led the Wesmen with 18 points on 9-of-13 shooting, and also grabbed nine rebounds. Chris Trumpy led the Vikes with 14 points and five assists. The Wesmen now have a record of 5-14, which puts them in third place in their division and good enough for a playoff spot. The team will close out their regular season tomorrow night against the UBC Thunderbirds at 8:00 p.m. at the Duckworth Centre.
