VIKES DEFEAT WESMEN IN SERIES OPENER
In a tight defensive game the visiting Victoria Vikes defeated the hometown Winnipeg Wesmen 70-64 in game one of the Canada West quarterfinals Friday night at the Duckworth Centre. The Wesmen had their share of problems in the first half as they dug themselves into a hole by trailing 44-29 at the half. The Vikes were able to shut down Wesmen star JoAnne Wells, who had three fouls called against her in the half and only scored two points. Forward Uzo Asagwara was able to pick up the scoring with 14 points in the first half. The Wesmen did claw their way back to within four points but the Vikes went on a 15-4 run to end the half and take the lead into the locker room. In the second half the Wesmen came out with intensity and determination as they tightened up their defense and scored some clutch baskets. After trailing by 15 points the Wesmen were able to close to within five points with nine minutes to play and had momentum on their side. The Vikes would not go down as they fought back to extend their lead to ten points once again. In the last minute with the score 66-61 for the Vikes, the Wesmen had their chances to close to within a point but four missed free throws helped give the Vikes the victory in game one. Uzo Asagwara who scored 25 points led the Wesmen and Heather Thompson scored 10 points while pulling in six rebounds. Jania Mynott led the Vikes with 22 points. The two teams will battle once again in game two-tomorrow night at the Duckworth Centre. Game time is 8:00 p.m.

PANDAS TAKE OPENING MATCH AGAINST WESMEN
The Wesmen fought hard but came up short in this match. The Alberta Pandas defeated the Winnipeg Wesmen 3-1 in game one of the best of three Canada West quarterfinal matches at the Duckworth Centre Friday evening. The Pandas gained the upper early on taking the first set 25-20. In set number two the Wesmen showed that they are not quitters as they fell behind early in the set but rallied to take the set 25-22. In set number three the two teams battled tooth and nail for the advantage in the set. The third set featured many spectacular kills, blocks and defensive digs from both teams. Jocelyne Roy of the Wesmen had a strong set as she had numerous kills and digs to keep the Wesmen alive in the set. Despite the battle the Pandas won the set 31-29. In the fourth set the Pandas wore down the Wesmen and eventually took the set 25-21 for the victory. Jocelyne Roy led the Wesmen with 15 kills and 19 digs. Fourth year right side Manon Paquin was spectacular on the defensive end coming up with 28 digs. Tawana Wardlaw who had 17 kills led the Pandas and Janna Konihowski had 33 digs. The two teams will meet each other tomorrow night for game two at the Duckworth Centre. Game time is 6:00 p.m.

WESMEN SWEPT BY SPARTANS TO END SEASON
The Winnipeg Wesmen were defeated 3-1 by Trinity Western in Langley BC Friday evening. Ben Schellenberg had 14 kills and 9 digs while Martin Rochon had 13 kills for the Wesmen. The Spartans win the best of three series 2-0.

WESMEN POUNDED IN GAME ONE AGAINST COUGARS
In game one of the Canada West Quarterfinal, the Regina Cougars defeated the Winnipeg Wesmen 109-66 Friday night in Regina. The Wesmen never had a chance in this one as they trailed 59-34 at halftime. In the second half the rout continued as the Cougars scored 50 points to elevate them to the wide margin victory. Dan Shynkaryk led the Wesmen with 18 points and Ryan Roper contributed 14 points in the loss. Joel Hunter who scored a game high 24 points led the Cougars. The two teams will battle tomorrow night in game two of the best of three quarterfinal games

WESMEN OVERPOWER PANDAS TO FORCE GAME THREE
The Wesmen played like a team on a mission. The Wesmen defeated the Alberta Pandas 3-2 in front of 1000 spectators at the Duckworth Centre to even their Canada West Quarterfinal series at 1-1. The Wesmen had fire in their eyes from the onset of the match and it showed, as they were a more focused and determined team. In set one the Pandas jumped out to a 10-5 lead before the Wesmen went on an 8-3 run to tie the score at 13-13. After a technical timeout the Pandas gained momentum and eventually took the first set 25-20. In set number two the Wesmen never trailed as they took the second set 25-23. In the third set the Wesmen relied on the play of fifth year star Andrea Charbonneau as she had several kills and blocks to lead the Wesmen to a 26-24 set victory. The Wesmen were looking for the match in the fourth set but a stubborn and determined Pandas team kept the Wesmen attack off balance. The set was even all throughout and in the end despite Jocelyne Roys five kills in the set, the Pandas rebounded and took the set 25-23. In the fifth and deciding set the Wesmen stormed out to a quick 8-2 lead as key kills by Charbonneau and nice net play by Christa Desrochers gave the team a comfortable lead. In the rest of the set both teams exchanged points to make the score 14-8 in the Wesmen's favour. The Wesmen needed one more point for the match and Aynsley Laluk pounded away the winning point to give the Wesmen a 15-10 set victory and the match. Andrea Charbonneau had 18 kills and Jocelyne Roy was fantastic coming away with 17 kills and 25 digs. Third year setter Christa Desrocher had 57 set assists for the Wesmen. Tawana Wardlaw had 24 kills for the Pandas and Janna Konihowski came up with 36 digs. The third and deciding game of this quarterfinal series will go Sunday afternoon at 1:00 p.m. at the Duckworth Centre.

WESMEN FORCE DECIDING GAME WITH VICTORY OVER VIKES
The Wesmen defeated the Victoria Vikes 58-53 in game two of their Canada West quarterfinal series Saturday night at the Duckworth Centre. The first half of the game was a tight defensive contest with both teams only shooting in the 30% range from the field. The Vikes stormed out of the gate to a quick 8-0 lead before the game was five minutes old. The Wesmen had chances to score but the shots were not falling and missed lay-ups once again hurt the team. The Wesmen were able to hold the Vikes at bay and went on a 10-0 run to close out the first half trailing 22-20. In the second half the Wesmen came out on fire as back-to-back buckets by Kate Daniels gave the Wesmen a 33-30 lead, which seemed to spark the team. The Vikes were able to stay within striking distance of the Wesmen as they went on a 5-0 run to close the Wesmen lead to 47-45 with about five minutes left to play. The Wesmen got a big three pointer from Daniels which gave them a 52-47 lead heading into the final two minutes of play. The Vikes came within three points of the Wesmen but JoAnne Wells nailed a clutch jumper with 28 seconds to secure the victory. Wells led the Wesmen with 16 points, Uzo Asagwara had 13 points and Heather Thompson had a strong game finishing with 12 points and seven rebounds. The third and deciding game will be played tomorrow afternoon at 3:00 p.m. at the Duckworth Centre.

WESMEN SEASON COMES TO AN END WITH LOSS TO COUGARS
The Regina Cougars defeated the Winnipeg Wesmen 91-75 Saturday night in Regina. The win gives the Cougars the quarterfinal series in two straight games. The Wesmen were in this game at halftime trailing 40-39. In the second half the Cougars exploded and scored on six consecutive shots to run away with the game. Dan Shynkaryk was the top scorer for the Wesmen by pouring in 32 points on 12-for-19 shooting and also pulling down 12 rebounds. Joel Hunter led the Cougars with 32 points, including 6-for-7 from three point territory.

WESMEN FIGHT HARD IN LOSS TO PANDAS
The Wesmen gave it their all this match. Unfortunately the great effort fell just short as the Alberta Pandas defeated the Wesmen 3-2 to win their Canada West quarterfinals series 2-1. The first set began with a trade off of points until the score was tied 8-8. After the technical timeout the Wesmen went on a 5-0 run to open a 13-8 lead. The Wesmen played solid from there as they took the first set 25-23. The second set belonged to the Pandas as they never trailed and eventually took the set 25-18 to even the match. The third set was a close, hard fought one in which the Wesmen trailed early but got key kills from Andrea Charbonneau and Jocelyne Roy to bring the Wesmen to within a point at 17-16 for the Pandas. The Pandas were not rattled and fought off the Wesmen attack to take the third set 25-21. In the fourth set the Wesmen showed great hustle and great net play. Kristin Brisebois and Andrea Charbonneau each had key blocks in the set to help the Wesmen take the fourth set 25-23. The fifth and deciding set saw the Pandas jump out to an 8-5 lead. After the time-out Kaitlin Jackson came up with two huge blocks and a kill by Nicola Dirks to tie the set at 8-8 followed that. The rest of the set saw the teams exchange points to tie the score at 13-13. The Pandas made it to 14 and needed one point for the match when Aynsley Laluk came thru with a kill to tie the score at 14-14. The Pandas fought off the challenge and took the next two points to win the set 16-14 and the match. Jocelyne Roy had a great match for the Wesmen finishing with 18 kills and 17 digs. Andrea Charbonneau was a force all night pounding away 21 kills and also five blocks. Chelsea Grimson and Tawana Wardlaw each had 24 kills for the Pandas. Despite the loss the Wesmen still qualify for the Canada West Final Four, which begins next Friday night in Calgary.

VIKES DEFEAT WESMEN TO CAPTURE SERIES
The Wesmen were defeated on their home court 63-58 by the Victoria Vikes in the third and deciding game of their Canada West quarterfinal series. The victory gives the Vikes an invitation to the Canada West Final Four at Simon Fraser next weekend. The game was a hard fought defensive battle with neither team allowing any open shots or easy baskets. In the first half the Vikes used the long ball to gain a 30-26 lead at halftime. The Vikes were 5-for-12 from three-point territory to gain the upper hand. In the second half the Wesmen came out of the locker room on an 8-0 run to gain a 34-30 lead. The two teams continued their strong defense as the score was tied again 44-44 with 7:30 left to play. The Wesmen got a big three-point basket from Kate Daniels with just over six minutes to play to give the Wesmen a 47-45 lead. In the closing minutes the Wesmen were guilty of a turnover, which helped the Vikes reel off five straight points and a 55-50 lead. In the final minute the Wesmen tried desperately to get even but the Vikes made their foul shots and preserved the victory. JoAnne Wells led the Wesmen with 20 points and Heather Thompson had one of her best games of the season by putting in 18 points and pulling down 15 rebounds. Jody Potts led the Vikes with 24 points including four three pointers. The Wesmen will now prepare for the CIS Women’s Basketball Championships to take place as they gain an automatic berth from being the host city.
