WESMEN FIGHT OFF PANDAS CHALLENGE FOR VICTORY
The Wesmen were in a fight and in the end it was a fight they won. The Wesmen extended their match unbeaten streak to 15 with a hard fought 3-1 victory over the fourth ranked Alberta Pandas in front of 1300 spectators at the Duckworth Centre Friday evening. The first set was a close back and forth affair with both teams battling hard for every point. The Wesmen won the first set 25-18 with Aynsley Laluk and Andrea Charbonneau leading the way with four kills each in the set. In the second set the Wesmen fell behind 5-0 to open the set and closed the gap on a few occasions but the Pandas prevailed and won the second set 25-18 to even the match. The third set was a battle with both teams looking for the advantage. The Pandas went on a 5-1 run midway thru the set, which gave them a 15-10 lead. After the technical timeout the Wesmen went on a 15-7 run to win the set 25-22. The battle continued in the fourth set as the Wesmen led for most of the set on their way to a hard fought 25-21 set victory. The Wesmen were led by Aynsley Laluk with 15 kills and Jocelyne Roy who pounded away 14 kills. The team was also strong on defense as Andrea Charbonneau had 17 digs and Kristin Brisebois and Nicola Dirks each came up with 12 digs. Tawana Wardlaw who had a strong game with 15 kills led the Pandas. The Wesmen now have a record of 15-2 and will face the Pandas tomorrow evening at the Duckworth Centre.

WESMEN PUT UP GOOD FIGHT IN LOSS TO GOLDEN BEARS
The Wesmen men’s volleyball team are fighters. The team proved that in this match as they gave the number one ranked Alberta Golden Bears all they could handle. The Wesmen were defeated 3-0 Friday night at the Duckworth Centre in front of 1300 spectators. The Golden Bears showed why they are the number one ranked team in the country by winning the first set by a score of 25-17. The team battled hard in the second set and even had a few chances to win the set, but the experience and power of the Bears came thru as they hung on to win 28-26 and take a 2-0 lead. In the third set the Wesmen were hoping that lady luck would fall on their side. The team pushed the Bears as far as possible but they fell just short in dropping the third set 26-24. Despite the loss the Wesmen were pleased with the effort. “ We played hard, the bounces just did not go our way,” said fourth year player Jarrod Small”. Ben Schellenberg who had 14 kills and six digs led the Wesmen. Nicholas Cundy led the Golden Bears with 18 kills. The loss drops the Wesmen record to 7-10 and they will next see action Saturday evening against the same Alberta Golden Bears.

WESMEN IMPRESSIVE IN VICTORY OVER COUGARS
The Wesmen women’s basketball team improved their regular season record to 15-2 with a 68-50 victory over the Regina Cougars Friday night in Regina. CIS scoring leader JoAnne Wells led the Wesmen with 31 points on 12-for-18 shooting from the field. Uzo Asagwara had a strong game as well finishing with 18 points. The Wesmen will look for the weekend sweep tomorrow night as they face the Cougars once again.

WESMEN FALL FLAT IN LOSS TO COUGARS
The Wesmen men's basketball team had a rough game, as they were defeated 86-68 by the Regina Cougars Friday night in Regina. "The team played awful right from the start, it was not a good effort", said head coach Dave Crook. Erfan Nasajpour, who was battling sickness all day, scored 13 points while Dan Shynkaryk had 12 points in the loss for the Wesmen. The loss drops the Wesmen record to 5-12 and they will face the Cougars again tomorrow night in Regina.

WESMEN FALL SHORT IN BATTLE WITH GOLDEN BEARS
The Wesmen played one of their better matches of the season. Unfortunately the Wesmen fell short in dropping a 3-2 decision to the number one ranked Alberta Golden Bears 3-2 in front of 1050 fans at the Duckworth Centre. The Wesmen were focused and determined to put last night’s defeat behind them. The Wesmen in the first set were on fire as Jarrod Small had five kills in the set to pace the Wesmen to a 25-20 set victory. The second set was a back and forth affair with several fantastic blocks and defensive digs. The Golden Bears gained the upper hand and won the set 25-23. In set number three first year outside Alan Ahow had several key kills and a service ace to lead the Wesmen to a 25-22 set victory and a 2-1 edge in the match. In the fourth set the Golden Bears showed why they are the number one ranked team in the country as they gained the advantage all set and wore down the Wesmen to take the set 25-21 and even the match at 2-2. In the fifth set the Wesmen seemed to run out of steam as Alberta had complete control of the match winning 15-4. Ryan Bevan had a great game for the Wesmen leading the way with 16 kills. On the defensive side third year libero Marc De Spiegelaere came up with 13 digs. Jeremy King and Nicholas Cundy each had 17 kills for the Golden Bears. The lose drops the Wesmen record to 7-11 and they will close out the regular season with a pair of matches at Saskatchewan next weekend.

WESMEN DEFEATED IN TOUGH MATCH WITH PANDAS
It was a classic battle between two of the top teams in the country. The fourth ranked Alberta Pandas defeated the third ranked Winnipeg Wesmen 3-2 Saturday night at the Duckworth Centre. The loss for the Wesmen ends an amazing 15 match win streak that started back in November. The Wesmen cam out and played a strong first set defeating the Pandas 25-19. In the second set the Wesmen had the lead on several occasions but the Pandas never gave up and took the second set 26-24. In the third set the Wesmen regrouped and refocused the way excellent teams do. The Wesmen took the third set 25-21 and held a 2-1 sets lead. In the fourth set the Wesmen could not get too much past the Pandas at the net as they were defeated 25-17 and forcing a fifth and deciding set. In the exciting fifth set the Wesmen jumped out to a quick 10-8 lead but that lead evaporated as the Pandas took the next three points for an 11-10 lead. Jocelyne Roy then came thru with two big kills to tie the match at 13-13. The Pandas took the next two points to take the fifth set 15-13 and win the match. Fifth year player Aynsley Laluk led the Wesmen with 16 kills and fellow fifth year player Andrea Charbonneau contributed with 12 kills. The Wesmen were strong on defense with all six starters each having over 10 digs with Kristin Brisebois leading the way with 19 defensive digs. Chelsea Grimson who had 15 kills while Janna Konihowski had an amazing 34 defensive digs led the Pandas. The Wesmen now sport a record of 15-3 and they will close out the regular season with a pair of matches against UBC next weekend. The game featured a special presentation to fifth year players Andrea Charbonneau and Aynsley Laluk who were each playing their last regular season home game at the Duckworth Centre.

WESMEN DROP CLOSE ONE TO COUGARS
The Wesmen women’s basketball team dropped a close 74-72 decision to the Regina Cougars Saturday evening in Regina. The Wesmen struggled by shooting 36% from the field. Fifth year star JoAnne Wells had 29 points, and 12 rebounds for the Wesmen. Jana Schweitzer who finished with 21 points led the Cougars. The loss drops the Wesmen’s record to 15-3 and they will next action next weekend with games against Victoria and UBC at the Duckworth Centre.

WESMEN PLAY BETTER BUT FALL TO COUGARS
The Wesmen played better this game but the end result was the same. The Wesmen dropped their second game in as many nights to the Regina Cougars by a score of 82-73 in a game held in Regina. The Wesmen ran into a hot shooting Cougar team that connected on an amazing 54% of their shots from the field. Dan Shynkaryk led the Wesmen with 19 points and nine rebounds while fifth year player Tony Richter pitched in with 17 points and nine rebounds. The loss drops the Wesmen's record to 5-13 and they will finish the regular season at home next weekend with games against Victoria and UBC.
