WESMEN LOSE CLOSE GAME TO RIVAL BISONS
It was another chapter of the storied rivalry between the two universities. It was also a chapter the Wesmen would like to forget. The Wesmen fell 70-68 to the Manitoba Bisons in front of 1400 spectators at the University of Winnipeg’s Duckworth Centre Thursday evening. The Bisons kept the high powered Wesmen attack off-balance for most of the game and only holding the Wesmen to 34 first half points. The Wesmen would have been further behind had it not been for the play of JoAnne Wells who scored 20 points in the first half. Winnipeg fell victim to a hot shooting Bison team that was 10-for-18 from three- point territory. In the second half the Wesmen were able to stay close and even grab the lead on several occasions but hot shooting Bison Diana Gray buried the Wesmen with a barrage of three pointers. The Wesmen had chances to win or tie the game in the final ten seconds. The Bisons hit the free throw line with under five seconds to play and could only connect on one of two from the line to give the Bisons a 70-68 lead. The Wesmen raced down court looking for the tie or win but a desperation shot from rookie Jenny Ezirim was off the mark and gave the Bisons the victory. C.I.S. scoring leader JoAnne Wells had a great game scoring a team high 33 points on 14-for-21 from the field. Jae Pirnie was a monster under the boards grabbing 14 rebounds, including 13 on the offensive board. The Bison’s were led by guard Diana Gray who scored 28 points including six three pointers. The loss was the second in three games for the Wesmen who now have a Canada West regular season record of 13-2. The two rivals will do battle next on Saturday evening at the University of Manitoba in the second day of the Duckworth Challenge.

WESMEN DEFEAT BISONS TO TAKE STEP CLOSER TO PLAYOFFS
It was one of those games that could decide a season. The Wesmen played a solid game in defeating the Manitoba Bisons 81-66 in a key game at the Duckworth Centre Thursday evening. The win was important as it moves the Wesmen two points ahead of the Bisons for the last playoff spot in the Great Plains Division of Canada West standings. The Wesmen came out on fire racing out to a quick 8-0 lead before the game was three minutes old. Solid play and tough defense was the key for the Wesmen as they led 36-25 at the half. In the second half the Wesmen were shooting a respectable 49% from the field including 4-for-8 from three-point territory to seal the much-needed victory and give the Wesmen a shot at the playoffs. " The win was a big stepping stone towards the playoffs", said Wesmen assistant coach Garth McAlpine. The Wesmen were led once again by super guard Erfan Nasajpour who scored 26 points and added nine assists. Chris Dyck led the Bisons in the losing cause scoring 19 points. The victory gives the Wesmen a record of 4-11 in Canada West regular season action. The Wesmen will pay a visit to the University of Manitoba on Saturday evening to look for

WESMEN TRAIN RUNS OVER BISONS IN CHALLENGE OPENER
In the teams first home match in two months the Wesmen continued just where they left off. The fifth ranked Wesmen defeated their rivals and eighth ranked Manitoba Bisons in three straight sets in front of 1200 spectators at the Duckworth Centre on Friday evening. The set scores were 25-14, 25-14, and 25-19 and also give the University of Winnipeg a 1-0 lead in the annual Duckworth Challenge. In the first set the Wesmen simply dominated with several key kills by Aynsley Laluk and Nicola Dirks. The team jumped out to a quick 16-11 lead at the technical timeout and then the Wesmen went on a 8-0 run to help them to a 25-14 first set win. In the second set it was the Bisons who jumped out to a lead but saw that lead disappear as the Wesmen fought back to tie the game at 8-8. After a time out the two teams exchanged points until the Wesmen rolled off eight straight points to close out the second set by a score of 25-14. In the third and final set it was just a matter of time for the Wesmen to close out the match and they did just that by taking the third and final set by a score of 25-19. Fifth year player Aynsley Laluk who pounded away 16 kills and also coming up with 11 digs led the Wesmen. Nicola Dirks who has been playing outstanding, as of late had 11 kills in the match. WESMEN PUT UP GOOD FIGHT BUT FALL TO BISONS
The Wesmen men’s volleyball team came into this contest on a roll playing some great volleyball. Unfortunately despite a great effort the team took a step backward dropping a 3-1 decision to the Manitoba Bisons on Friday night at the Duckworth Centre. The team looked to be well on their way in this match as they took the first set 25-23. First year player Alan Ahow and fourth year player Jarrod Small came up big in the set each coming up with four kills apiece to pace the Wesmen. In the second set the Wesmen had the lead on numerous occasions but the Bisons fought back to tie the score at 14-14. The teams traded points in the close second set but the Bisons prevailed 26-24 to tie the match at one set apiece. In the third set momentum was on the Bisons side as they build a lead and also capitalized on ten Wesmen errors to take the third set by a score of 25-20. In the fourth set the Wesmen looked like they were on their way to evening up the match as they roared out to a 12-4 lead on the Bisons. Unfortunately for the Wesmen the Bisons went on a 10-3 run to close the gap to 15-14. The Bisons then stopped the Wesmen in their tracks by blocking everything in site and pounding away kill after kill to win the set 25-23. The Wesmen were led by Ryan Bevan with 12 kills, while Alan Ahow came up with 11 kills in the lose. Marc De Spiegelaere had a great defensive game coming up with 13 digs. Nathan Toews led the Bisons with 13 kills and Alex de Chantal had 16 digs in the winning effort.
Ahow was named the Player of the Match for the Wesmen while Trevor Froese was chosen for the Bisons. The 14th annual Duckworth Challenge is now even at 1-1 with the basketball games tomorrow at the University of Manitoba deciding this year’s winner. The Wesmen and Bisons will meet again tomorrow evening at the Duckworth Centre.

WESMEN FALL TO BISONS…AGAIN
It looks like winning the first set for the Wesmen is a curse. The Wesmen for the second night in a row won the first set but dropped the next three as they were defeated 3-1 for the second night in a row in front of 1200 spectators at the Duckworth Centre Saturday evening. The Wesmen came out on fire in the first set as Martin Rochon led the team to a 25-21 first set win. Rochon had two kills, seven digs and a service ace to jump start the Wesmen. The second set looked like a repeat of last night as the Wesmen fell behind early but battled back to tie the set on numerous occasions but could not put the set away as the Bisons reeled off the last six points to give Manitoba a 25-20 second set win. In the third set the teams battled back and forth until the technical timeout where the Wesmen went on a 3-0 run to take the lead at 11-8. An illegal rotation call on the Wesmen seemed to take the momentum away from the Wesmen as the Bisons went on to win the set 25-22. In the fourth set the Wesmen were unable to capitalize on several kill attempts and that allowed the Bisons to take the set 25-22 and the win the match. Ben Schellenberg who finished with 17 kills led the Wesmen. The Bisons were led by Toon Van Lankvelt who pounded away 20 kills. The loss drops the Wesmen record to 7-9 and they will next see action next against the Alberta Golden Bears starting next Friday at the Duckworth Centre.

WESMEN TRAMPLE BISONS TO COMPLETE WEEKEND SWEEP
The Wesmen women's volleyball team is taking no prisoners. The Wesmen simply dominated once again by defeating the Manitoba Bisons 3-0 Saturday night at the Duckworth Centre. The victory gives the Wesmen a weekend sweep of their cross-town rivals and also extended their match-winning streak to an impressive 14 games. In the first set the Wesmen had to fight for every point as the Bisons were determined to put last night's match behind them. The Wesmen machine rolled on to a hard fought 25-22 first set victory. In the second set the Wesmen capitalized on a Bison team that was unable to put anything past the Wesmen at the net. The trio of Andrea Charbonneau, Aynsley Laluk and Kristin Brisebois were too much for the Bisons to handle as the Wesmen took the second set 25-15. In the third set the Bisons gave the Wesmen everything they can handle but could not defeat the Wesmen machine as they took the third and final set 25-21. Aynsley Laluk led the Wesmen with 14 kills and fellow fifth year player Andrea Charbonneau had a great game finishing with 13 kills and 11 digs. Sabrina Barnes led the Bisons with eight kills in the match.
