WESMEN BEAT BISONS TO ADVANCE TO FINAL FOUR
In a Canada West Quarter-Final series where Winnipeg and Manitoba went at each other tooth and nail, leaving everything on the floor, the Wesmen had just a little more in the tank to win the decisive Game Three 60-56 in front of 1700 people at the Duckworth Centre on Sunday afternoon. Manitoba took the opening contest on Friday night and a Winnipeg victory on Saturday set the stage for the one-game winner takes all. Gutsy Winnipeg forward Janet Wells hit six straight foul shots in the last 1:26 of the game, the last two coming with 6 seconds left after she rebounded a missed Linda Guy shot and was fouled, to lift her team to victory. Winnipeg led 30-27 in the first half, thanks in part to Manitoba’s 14 turnovers. But the gritty Bisons got things back on track in the second frame and with 11 straight points from Linda Guy saw their lead jump to 9 with under 10 minutes left. Winnipeg’s JoAnne Wells answered back however, dumping in 8 straight points of her own, with another Guy score squeezed in between, to cut the Manitoba lead to two with 7:46 remaining. From there the two teams traded big hoops, clutch foul shots and untimely turnovers to set up the dramatic finish. Janet Wells led Winnipeg with her second straight double-double, hitting for 23 points to go with 10 rebounds. Sister JoAnne added 21 points 6 boards and 4 steals. Both were 8 for 8 from the line, capping a perfect weekend for Janet as she went 16 for 16 in the three game series. Linda Guy was tops for Manitoba with 18 points, 6 rebounds and 3 steals. Forward Anna Drewniak supplied 14 points and 5 rebounds for the Bisons. The No. 8 ranked Wesmen now travel to Simon Fraser next weekend for the Canada West Conference Women’s Final Four, where they will meet the No. 4 Victoria Vikes in their opening tilt.

WESMEN FORCE DECIDING GAME
It was do or die and the Wesmen got it done. Second seeded Winnipeg forced a third and deciding game with the seventh seeded Manitoba Bisons by knocking off their cross-town rivals 68-54 in Canada West Women’s Quarter-Final action at the Duckworth Centre on Saturday night. Guard JoAnne Wells buried a 3- pointer, her first basket of the second half, with 2:18 left in the contest, pushing the Wesmen lead to nine and taking the wind out of the Bison’s sails in the eventual Winnipeg victory. The Wesmen led 33-32 at the half and used a 15-4 run in the last 7:30 of the contest to wrestle the game away from the Bisons in the rough and tumble affair. The Wells sisters fuelled the Wesmen attack for a second night in a row, with JoAnne hitting for 20 points and pulling down five rebounds, while sister Janet added 16 points and 11 boards for a playoff double-double. 5th year post Melissa Stoesz was tops for Manitoba with 14 points and Diana Gray chipped in with 11 more. The Wesmen, ranked 8th nationally and the Bisons, occupying the No. 9 position, will battle it Sunday afternoon at 4 at the Duckworth Centre with a trip to Vancouver for the Canada West Women’s Final Four on the line.

WESMEN DROP GAME ONE TO BISONS
In a game that went right down to the wire, the seventh seeded Manitoba Bisons upset the No. 2 Winnipeg Wesmen in Game One of the Canada West Women’s Basketball Quarter-Finals played at the Duckworth Centre on Friday night. Wesmen guard JoAnne Wells was fouled as she drove to the hoop with 31 seconds left in the game, and hit her two foul shots to put Winnipeg up 54-53. But Manitoba answered back as Anna Drewniak scored off of an inside feed by Linda Guy to put her team up by one with 8 seconds remaining. Sally Kaznica’s baseline jumper rolled off the rim on Winnipeg’s final trip down the floor and Manitoba escaped with the 55-54 victory and a one game lead in the best of three series. The see-saw affair saw the score tied six times with a nine point Bison lead the largest of the game. Linda Guy led the Bisons with 20 points, 5 rebounds and 3 assists, while 5th year post Melissa Stoesz added 14 points to the Manitoba total. Winnipeg got 23 points from guard JoAnne Wells and 12 more, plus 7 boards, from sister Janet. Manitoba, ranked No. 9 nationally, shot 39.1% from the field and No. 8 Winnipeg checked in at 40%. The Bisons shot 16-18 from the line, while the Wesmen were 8 of 9. Game two of the series goes Saturday night at the Duckworth Centre at 7:00 pm.
