Canada West Conference Women's Basketball Final Four - Championship Game
Simon Fraser 76 Wesmen 50
WESMEN COME UP SHORT IN BID FOR CANADA WEST CONFERENCE CHAMPIONSHIP
The University of Winnipeg Wesmen Women's Basketball team is hoping to get another crack at top ranked Simon Fraser during the CIS Nationals after dropping a one-sided game to the Clan in the Canada West Conference Final played in Burnaby, B.C. on Saturday night. Simon Fraser used a 26-5 run over the final seven minutes of the first half and the first four minutes of the second frame to take control of the championship contest. The teams had been tied 20-20 before the SFU outburst. Winnipeg trailed 35-22 at the break, suffering from 5 of 27 field goal shooting in the first half. Things didn't get any better in the final 20 minutes as SFU used the No. 1 defense in Canada West to harrass the Wesmen into an overall 25% shooting performance. Fifth year centre Jessica Kaczowka led the defending CIS champ Clan with 20 points and 9 rebounds in her final home game. Winnipeg saw 11 points each from JoAnne and Janet Wells. Janet added 6 rebounds as well. The Wesmen get the week off before heading to Hamilton and McMaster University for the CIS Nationals from March 7-10.

Canada West Conference Women's Basketball Final Four
Wesmen 76 Victoria 62
WESMEN VANQUISH VIKES, FACE CLAN IN CAN WEST FINAL
The University of Winnipeg Wesmen Women’s Basketball team secured itself a spot in the CIS Nationals, and a date with No. 1 Simon Fraser in the Canada West Conference Final Saturday night, with a 76-62 win over the Victoria Vikes on Friday. Canada West First Team All-Star JoAnne Wells continued her dominant playoff performance with a double-double, 24 points and 11 rebounds, sparking her second seeded team to victory in the second Canada West Conference Semi-Final played at Simon Fraser University in Burnaby, BC. Simon Fraser knocked off Calgary 87-56 earlier in the evening to advance to the title game. Wells felt the win over third seed Victoria was an extension of last weekend’s hard-fought series win over Manitoba.
“Ever since the playoffs started we have really come together as a team,” said the 5’11” third year forward from Bedford, Nova Scotia. “Everybody is playing unselfishly and finding each other on the floor.” Guards Heidi Schwartz and Sally Kaznica chipped in with 16 points each for Winnipeg, ranked No. 5 nationally. The Wesmen out-rebounded Victoria 37-22 while shooting 50% from the field.
“We boxed-out really well and won most of the one-on-one battles – that was the key,” said Wells.
Victoria saw 19 points from guard Lindsay Anderson and 13 points from forward Krystal O’Byrne. The Vikes struggled from beyond the arc, converting on just six of 25 attempts. Victoria takes on Calgary at 6:15 pm Saturday night with the winner landing a spot in the Nationals. At 8:15 in the main event, No. 1 seed Simon Fraser, led by Conference MVP Jessica Kaczowka, and number two Winnipeg meet for the first time this year to crown the Canada West Conference Champion for 2002-03. With three spots awarded to the Canada West Conference, both teams qualify for the CIS Nationals in Hamilton from March 7-10.
