CIS National Women's Volleyball Championships - 1st round
Wesmen def. Laval 3-0 (25-21, 25-21 and 25-23)
WESMEN STUN HOME TOWN LAVAL IN CIS SHOCKER!
The University of Winnipeg Wesmen Women’s Volleyball team pulled off a huge upset in the opening round of the CIS Women’s Volleyball National Championships on Friday night. Facing the No. 2 ranked team in Canada backed by a rabid home crowd in packed Laval Universite Gymnasium, the seventh seeded Wesmen kept their composure the whole way through, shutting out the Laval Rouge et Or a 3-0, and spoiling the host university’s designs on winning a CIS Championship in their own backyard. In the pivotal third set Winnipeg went up 8-2, only to see Laval claw its way back into it, taking the lead at 13-12, and whipping the crowd into a frenzy. The teams traded points from then on until the Wesmen pulled ahead 21-20, and kept the lead the rest of the way in the third set win, and the match victory. Setter Talitha Lemoine was named Player of the Game for her efforts as she orchestrated the Winnipeg attack with 44 assists. Second Team CIS All-star Andrea Charbonneau picked up 14 kills and left side hitter Jocelyn Roy had 17 digs in a huge win for the young squad, and an even bigger victory for coach Diane Scott’s Wesmen Women’s Volleyball program. In earlier matches Alberta beat Dalhousie 3-0, and Sherbrooke knocked off UBC by the same score. The Wesmen take on the winner of the Toronto-Calgary match-up at 8:00 pm EST Saturday night, with the winner advancing to the Gold medal game on Sunday at 4:00 pm and the loser playing in the bronze medal game at 1:00 pm. - source Colin Fraser - Wesmen Media Relations

CIS WEBSITE REPORT
A huge upset marked the third preliminary round match of the 2003 CIS Women’s Volleyball Championship held in Quebec City. The #7 University of Winnipeg Wesmen, despite playing in front of an important and hostile crowd at Université Laval, defeated the #2 Rouge et Or in straight sets. As soon as they jumped on the court, the Wesmen look confident, letting everyone know they would not be intimidated by the home crowd. Despite the loud chants for the home team, Winnipeg continued to work efficiently and to show a lot of character. Even if the game was a 3-0 affair for the visitors, the numerous fans were treated to a fantastic display of talent and skills, as all three sets were well balanced. The Rouge et Or was desperately seeking to gain the advantage in every set, but the Wesmen would have none of it. Winnipeg’s victory, surprising or not, was fully earned. The Wesmen battled for 92 minutes and were simply too good for their host on this particular night.
PLAYER OF THE GAME: Talitha Lemoine (Winnipeg, MB), Winnipeg Wesmen, 44 assists , 9 digs.

WESMEN IN GOLD MEDAL GAME AFTER POSTING SECOND CONSECUTIVE UPSET
Cinderella is on a roll. The University of Winnipeg Wesmen Women’s Volleyball team knocked off another higher seeded team in the CIS Nationals Saturday night, landing the upstarts from the Prairies a berth in Sunday’s Gold medal game. This time the victim was the No. 3 seed Calgary, as the seventh seeded Wesmen used another balanced attack, and great defense to down the Dinos 3-1. The match was much different than last night’s boisterous affair with Laval as the crowd was almost non-existent this time out. But Winnipeg adapted well and led by Player of the Game Aynsley Laluk’s 17 kills and 18 digs relegated Calgary to the sidelines while advancing to tomorrow’s final. Andrea Charbonneau added 26 kills and Jocelyn Roy was a defensive force with 22 digs for the Wesmen. Winnipeg meets the winner of No. 1 Alberta and No. 5 Sherbrooke in the Sunday afternoon final at 3:00 CST. The Gold Medal Match will also be featured on TSN – but will be delayed by an hour, starting at 4:00 pm.

WESMEN SETTLE FOR SILVER, BUT VOW TO RETURN
The Universite of Sherbrooke Vert et Or won the first ever CIS Women’s Volleyball Championship for a Quebec school by defeating the University of Winnipeg Wesmen 3-1 on Sunday afternoon. After dropping the first set to the Wesmen, the Vert et Or stormed back using strong net play to take the next three and claim honours as the top team in Canada for the 2002-03 season. It was a great run for a young Winnipeg team, without any fourth or fifth year players, as it upset No. 2 Laval and No. 3 Calgary en route to the Championship final. Third year middle blocker and Second Team All-Canadian Andrea Charbonneau wrapped an outstanding tournament with an All-star. Left side hitter Jocelyn Roy was also named an All-star for her solid play and setter Talitha Lemoine’s efforts garnered her the Most Sportsmanlike Player. The Wesmen arrive back in Winnipeg Monday afternoon.
