UNIVERSITY OF WINNIPEG WOMEN’S HOCKEY DOWN UNIVERSITY OF NORTH DAKOTA FIGHTING SIOUX

WINNIPEG, January 21, 2003 - The University of Winnipeg Women’s Hockey program, operating in its third year of existence, played an exhibition game last night (January 20th) against the highly touted NCAA Division 1, University of North Dakota Fighting Sioux. The game which was played at the Selkirk Arena, was an entertaining affair with the home team coming out on top with a 5-2 victory. The U of W were outshot 48-43 and played a majority of the second period short-handed but were able to skate their way to a convincing victory.

According to Head Coach Jill Mathez,
" This is very exciting news for the University of Winnipeg and the Women's Hockey program. The UND is a team that competes in Division 1 of the NCAA and is a full time American program. For us to compete so well against a team at that level is a real confidence booster for our players. We are looking forward to going down there and repeating our efforts"

Scoring goals for the University of Winnipeg were Carla Mac Millan (1 goal, 1 assist), Lauren
Mac Millan (1 goal, 1 assist), Leanne Heuchert (1 goal), Karen Mamchuk (1 goal) and
Cheryl Wiens (1 goal). Assists were also recorded by Amanda Schnell and Stephanie Messner.

The team’s next action is this coming weekend as they head to the Thunder Bay Comets tournament in Ontario before the return engagement in Grand Forks against the Fighting Sioux Sunday February 23.
