Wesmen def UBC Thunderbirds 3-1 (14-25, 25-23, 27-25, 27-25)
WESMEN UPSET NO.1 UBC
The Wesmen took a big step towards securing themselves a Canada West playoff spot by upsetting the No. 1 ranked UBC Thunderbirds in front of 1550 fans at the Duckworth Centre on Friday night. No. 6 Winnipeg looked tight in the first set, losing decisively to the veteran Thunderbird squad, but then settled down to win three close sets in a row. Wesmen Middle hitter Kristen Brisebois's spike found an opening in the UBC defence and Thunderbird Kaley Boyd kill attempt sailed out of bounds during the following sequence, handing Winnipeg a 27-25 fourth set win and the 3-1 match victory. Jocelyn Roy led the way for the Wesmen, picking up 16 kills and 13 digs. Left side hitter Aynsley Laluk pitched in with 14 more kills, while middle hitter Andrea Charbonneau added 12. Right side hitter Amy Matthews led both squads with 19 digs. Kathyrn Peck and Isabelle Czerveniak paced the Thunderbird attack with 11 kills each. The same two teams face each other again at the Duckworth Centre Saturday at 6:00 pm.

Calgary def. Wesmen 3-2 (25-14, 22-25, 25-17, 20-25, 19-17)
DINOS DUMP WESMEN
The Wesmen came out on the losing end of a five set see-saw battle with the University of Calgary Dinos in Canada West Men’s Volleyball action at the Duckworth Centre. Every time Calgary won a set the Wesmen would answer back with a win of their own, but ultimately Winnipeg couldn’t solve last season’s CIS player of the year Denis Zhukov who powered the Dinos to a 19-17 fifth set victory. Opposite side hitter Stephen Ens led the Wesmen charge with 16 kills and 7 digs, while middle hitter Cam Dobie added 11 more kills and 3 stuff blocks. Zhukov, a Kazakstan national team player, was tops for both squads with 25 kills. With the win Calgary breaks out a tie with Winnipeg to grab sole possession of fifth place in the Canada West Conference. The No. 7 Wesmen and No. 9 Dinos meet again in another crucial match at the Duckworth Centre Saturday at 7:30 pm.

UBC Thunderbirds def Wesmen 3-2 (19-25, 25-20, 25-22, 19-25, 18-16)
THUNDER-BIRDS NEED FIVE TO TOP WESMEN
The Wesmen came within a couple of points of taking another match off of the top-ranked UBC Thunderbirds in Canada West Women’s Volleyball played at the Duckworth Centre. An experienced UBC squad, starting four fifth year players, needed five sets, including a 18-16 final thriller, to put away the No. 6 ranked Winnipeg team. The well-played intense match could be a prelude to a first round Canada West playoff series - one that Winnipeg would enter into with confidence. UBC was led by Kathryn Peck’s 15 kills and 17 digs. Middle hitter Andrea Charbonneau was tops for the Wesmen with 17 kills, 13 digs and 3 stuff blocks. Left side hitter Aynsley Laluk supplied 16 kills and 14 digs to the Winnipeg cause as well.
Friday’s win over UBC coupled with a Saskatchewan loss puts the Wesmen into the post season, and next weekend’s final regular season matches will determine the position coach Diane Scott’s 9-9 team finishes in. The top six teams in Canada West make the playoffs.

Calgary Dinos def Wesmen 3-1 (25-19, 18-25, 25-19, 25-21)
DINOS DOWN WESMEN - AGAIN
The Wesmen dropped their second match in a row to the Calgary Dinos with a four-set loss at the Duckworth Centre on Saturday night. The Canada West Men’s Volleyball battle pitted No. 7 Winnipeg against No. 9 Calgary in a match the Wesmen needed to pin down a conference playoff spot. The Dinos rode the momentum of Friday night’s hard fought five set win to another victory over a deflated Winnipeg squad. Power hitter Denis Zhukov was again dominant for the Calgary picking up a second consecutive 20 plus kill total by notching 23. Opposite side hitter Stephen Ens led the Wesmen with 18 kills and 8 digs. Outside hitter Dave Bishop chipped in with 12 kills and 9 digs. Libero Shawn Scarcello led both teams with 14 digs. Winnipeg drops to 6-12 on the season and needs one match win or one UBC loss to secure the sixth and final post season berth. Coach Larry McKay’s Wesmen travel to Saskatchewan for their last two matches of the regular season next weekend.
