WESMEN VICTORIOUS OVER VIKES
In a Canada West Conference Women’s Basketball battle pitting the fifth and sixth ranked teams in the country, No. 6 Winnipeg knocked off No. 5 Victoria 53-39 at the Duckworth Centre on Friday night. A 3-pointer by Janet Wells with 4:16 left in the game put Winnipeg up by 17, spelling lights out for a dismal shooting Victoria squad. The Vikes managed only 25% from the field including a tough 9 for 29 from beyond the arc. Winnipeg led 24-20 at the half, but spurred on by a couple of 3-pointers by guard Sally Kaznica quickly pushed their lead to double digits. Kaznica led the way for the Wesmen notching 16 points and 5 rebounds. Freshman guard Uzo Asagwara chipped in 11 points to go with 4 rebounds, while forward Janet Wells added 9 points and 6 boards. Jania Mynott had 11 points and 7 rebounds to lead the Vikes. Winnipeg improves to 13-4 on the season and Victoria drops to 11-6. The same two teams meet again at the Duckworth Centre Saturday night. Tip-off is at 6:15.

Victoria led 31-27 at the half but were outscored 48-29 by an up tempo Winnipeg game in the second frame. Nasajpour led the Winnipeg charge with 25 points, 5 assists, and 5 rebounds. Backcourt partner Aldin Smalling added 17 points, 7 boards and 3 steals, while veteran post Dan Duggan chipped in 14 points, 12 of them coming in the second half. VIKES WORK THE LINE FOR WIN OVER WESMEN
In a game where Victoria went 23 for 24 from the line, 5th year guard Lindsay Anderson nailed two free throws with 25 seconds left to put the Vikes up by 8, and an eventual 59-51 victory over the Wesmen in a Canada West Women’s basketball tilt at the Duckworth Centre Saturday night. A three-pointer by Winnipeg guard Sally Kaznica cut the Victoria lead to two with 40 seconds left - but flawless free throw shooting down the stretch preserved the Vikes win. Victoria led 28-21 at the half, but the Wesmen climbed back into it with a 7-0 run to start the final 20 minutes tying the game at 28-28. The Vikes surged ahead again with 9 points in a row, including two 3-pointers, by forward Jania Mynott, and held the lead until a Wesmen basket by Angela Willerton knotted the score again at 46-46 with four minutes left. The Wesmen couldn’t take the lead though and Victoria grinded it out for the win. Guard Charmaine Izzard led Winnipeg with 14 points and 9 rebounds and was all over the floor defensively. Kaznica supplied 11 more for the Wesmen. Mynott was tops for the Vikes with 17 points, including a perfect 7 for 7 from the line. She had 6 boards and 3 steals as well. The weekend split leaves the No. 6 Wesmen, playing without injured leading scorer JoAnne Wells, with a 13-5 record and the No. 5 Vikes with a 12-6 record in Canada West Conference play. The final two games of the regular season for Winnipeg go next weekend at the Duckworth Centre when they take on the Alberta Golden Bears. Game time for both contests are 6:15 pm.

VIKES GET REVENGE AGAINST WESMEN
The Victoria Vikes kept their slim playoff hopes alive by beating the Wesmen in front of 1900 fans at the Duckworth Centre on Saturday night. Winnipeg led Victoria 35-29 at the half on the strength of forward Dave Brar’s 14 points, but were outscored 21-9 to start the second frame, putting the Vikes up 50-44 with 7 minutes off the clock. Eight straight points, including two 3-pointers, by Winnipeg guard Aldin Smallling cut the Victoria lead to 55-54 with 9:43 left in the game, but the Vikes used a strong post-up game to answer any Wesmen scoring, propelling them to the 73-64 victory. Forward Chris Marsh had 24 points and 6 rebounds to lead the Vikes, while guard Shaun Doherty added 15 points, 6 assists and 5 steals in a solid effort. Winnipeg got 22 points and 5 boards from Smalling and Brar chipped in 19 more in a losing effort. The Wesmen drop to 7-11 on the season, while Victoria improves to 7-11.
