Manitoba 55 def Wesmen 51 In Women's Basketball action at the Investors Group Athletic Centre on Thursday night, No.9 ranked Manitoba handed No. 1 Winnipeg their first loss of the 2002-03 campaign, snapping a perfect 20-0 mark in the process. The Wesmen were down 29-25 at the half, and in the second frame suffered through a 9:10 scoreless drought, until 3rd year guard JoAnne Wells hit a couple of free throws with 3:50 left in the game. The Bisons then pushed their lead to nine when guard Diana Gray knocked down a short jumper in the paint with the clock down to just over two minutes. Wells rallied Winnipeg late in the game; helping to cut the lead to two, but Manitoba’s 4th year stand-out Anna Drewniak hit two free throws with 11.5 seconds remaining, and the Bisons held on for the 55-51 victory. JoAnne Wells led Winnipeg with 19 points and 8 rebounds, while sister Janet provided 9 points and 7 rebounds. 4th year guard Linda Guy was tops for Manitoba with 14 points, 8 rebounds and 6 assists. Drewniak added 13 points and 13 boards in the Bison win. Winnipeg’s JoAnne Wells and Manitoba’s Drewniak were chosen as Duckworth Challenge Players of the Game. Winnipeg now sports a 10-1 record in the Canada West Conference. Manitoba picks up win number four to go with seven losses.

Wesmen 76 def Manitoba 68
The Wesmen Men’s basketball team downed Manitoba 76-68 to salvage a split in the first leg of the Duckworth Challenge played at the University of Manitoba’s Investors Group Athletic Centre on Thursday night. 2nd year player Aldin Smalling hit a 3-pointer to tie the score at 53-53 with just over nine minutes left in the game, giving the Wesmen the momentum for an 11-4 run and a seven point lead they wouldn’t look back from, en route to the victory. Duggan later added two big hoops down the stretch to salt away the win. Smalling’s offensive talent was again on display as the 5’10” guard racked up 24 points, many in a spectacular fashion. He also added 5 rebounds and 6 steals. Duggan had a solid game as well, piling up 19 points and 7 boards. 3rd year forward Tony Richter chipped in 10 points and 6 rebounds, while rookie guard Erfan Nasajpour had 9 boards, 5 steals, and 5 assists to go with 5 points. Manitoba was led by a superb effort from 4th year forward Jatinder Johal with 26 points, 11 rebounds and 3 blocked shots. Ryan Dulder added 21 more to the Bison total…Smalling and Johal were named Duckworth Challenge Players of the Game. Winnipeg improves to 4-7 in Canada Conference play, while Manitoba drops to 1-10.

WESMEN DROP TWO IN A ROW TO BISONS
The Manitoba Bisons showed Thursday's upset win over the No. 1 Wesmen wasn't just a blip on the map with a resounding 74-49 victory in the return match in front of 1600 fans at the Duckworth Centre on Saturday night. After heading to the locker room up a 32-27, the No. 9 ranked Bisons quickly pushed their lead to 13 points with an 8-0 run to start the second half. Winnipeg was never back in the game as an inside lay-up by 5th year post Melissa Stoesz, off of a great feed from 3rd year guard Jayne Legal-Antoniuk, put the Bisons up by 19 with 3:12 left - spelling lights out for the Wesmen. Manitoba shot 54 % from the field while Winnipeg checked in at 32.7%. 4th year guard Lynda Guy led the Manitoba attack with 22 points and 6 rebounds, while Stoesz had 19 and 4th year forward Anna Drewniak chipped in 16 to go with 7 boards. Winnipeg got 15 points and 4 rebounds from 3rd year guard JoAnne Wells and 8 points and 3 assists from 4th year guard Sally Kaznica in a losing cause. With the two losses Winnipeg's record drops to 10-2 in Canada Conference play. Manitoba improves to 5-7. The Wesmen travel to Regina next week to face a tough No. 6 ranked Cougar squad.

WESMEN SWEEP BISONS
The Wesmen took their second game in row from the Manitoba Bisons after picking up a 73-58 win in Canada West Men's Basketball action at the Duckworth Centre. A steal by freshman guard Erfan Nasajpour followed by a quick no-look pass to 2nd year post Phil Swart for a lay-up put the Wesmen up by 12 with just over three minutes left in the contest, and Winnipeg put it in cruise control the rest of the way in the 14 point victory.
Nasajpour led the way for the Wesmen, coming up only 2 assists shy of a triple double, with 20 points, 11 rebounds and 8 assists. 5th year post Dan Duggan added 14 points and 10 rebounds. Manitoba got 24 points and 10 rebounds from 4th year post David Wiebe. Winnipeg improves to 5-7 in Canada Conference play while Manitoba falls to 1-11. The Wesmen next see action against the Great Plains Division leading Regina Cougars in the Saskatchewan capital next weekend.
