Wesmen def. Calgary 3-2 (25-20, 25-18, 19-25, 26-28, 17-15)
The Wesmen got their Canada West season off to a good start with a hard fought five set victory over the defending Canada West Champions and CIS silver medalists, the University of Calgary Dinosaurs at the Duckworth Centre. Coach Diane Scott was pleased with her team's performance early in the match as they took a quick 2-0 set lead. An experienced Calgary squad evened things up, winning the next two to set the stage for a decisive fifth set.
"We're still a young team, we were up 2-0 and relaxed - we haven't learned we can't relax yet," said coach Scott.
But in the final see-saw set, the Wesmen returned to form claiming victory and the match. Andrea Charbonneau led the Wesmen with 23 kills and 5 stuff blocks and Aynsley Laluk added 16 kills and 14 digs in the Winnipeg victory.

WESMEN TAKE STING OUT OF CONCORDIA
In front of a large enthusiastic home crowd, three mascots and a brand new dance team, the Wesmen put on a show of their own with a 78-61 win over the Concordia University Stingers in the opening game of the Midway Chrysler Invitational Tournament. Coach Dave Crook liked the energy the fans brought to the game and was impressed with his team's play in their end of the court.
"It was a good defensive effort - 20 points in the first half - we stifled them," said Crook. The Wesmen coach was also happy with the performance of his front court.
"The big guys rebounded and played hard and physical, making it a tough game inside," said Crook. Wesmen Guard Aldin Smalling led all scorers with 25 points and added 5 steals in a solid effort for the Wesmen. Post J.P Lynch had 11 points, including a perfect 9 for 9 from the line, and added 5 rebounds in a strong effort coming off of the bench for the Wesmen. Concordia was led by Phillipe Langois who had 14 points and six assists for the Stingers.

WESMEN TAKE WEEKEND SERIES WITH SWEEP OF CALGARY
The Wesmen showed they are going to be a force to be reckoned with in Canada West this season after a 3-0 sweep of the University of Calgary at the Duckworth Centre. The win, coupled with a five set victory over the same Dinos on Friday, puts the Wesmen in a good position to start the season. Coach Diane Scott was especially pleased with how her team responded in the 3rd set after letting Calgary back into the match on Friday.
"We're getting better, Calgary came out strong in the 3rd set and this time we stayed with them - we're not giving up," said Scott. The Winnipeg coach also felt her team was in sync defensively.
"We did a better job with our defensive system tonight," said Scott. The Wesmen were once again led by the dynamic duo of Andrea Charbonneau and Aynsley Laluk, with 14 and 11 kills respectively. The win extends Winnipeg's match play undefeated streak to seven. The team's next action is on Nov. 1st and 2nd, when they take on the Clansmen of Simon Fraser at the Duckworth Centre

WESMEN DRIVE TO MIDWAY CHRYSLER CHAMPIONSHIP
Back to back three-pointers by Wesmen guards Erfan Nasajpour and Aldin Smalling midway through the second half pushed Winnipeg to a 15 point lead they wouldn't look back from en route to a 80-66 victory over a stubborn Wilfrid Laurier team to claim the Midway Chrysler Tournament Championship. After a scrappy first half that ended 28-28, the Wesmen used defensive pressure to push the tempo of the game in the final 20 minutes.
"Anytime the game got wide open we took advantage of it - we were quicker in the open court," said Wesmen Coach Dave Crook. Winnipeg guard Aldin Smalling had 21 points and 5 rebounds and took home the tournament MVP, while back court mate Erfan Nasajpour continued with an impressive freshman campaign adding 17 points and 5 assists and picking up a tournament all-star.
