After a bumpy start to their non-conference season, the Winnipeg Wesmen found smooth sailing on the east coast.
The Wesmen men's volleyball team scored its fourth straight sweep Thursday with a 3-0 (25-14, 25-10, 25-16) win over the UNB Reds in Fredericton, N.B. The Wesmen scored two wins off the Reds after doing the same to the Dalhousie Tigers in Halifax days earlier.
The Wesmen moved to 4-2 in their non-conference season, plus have an exhibition win over the CMU Blazers to their credit.
Thursday Daniel Thiessen again led the charge with 14 kills, while adding eight digs as the Wesmen hit a season-high .437 for the match. Ethan Duncan and Adrian Dyck also had eight kills for Winnipeg.
The Wesmen out-blocked UNB 24-6 with Garrett Jones again leading the way. Jones posted his third straight match with at least seven blocks, putting eight in Winnipeg's total. Fellow middle Keegan Teetaert added six of his own while also knocking down three kills on five swings with no errors.
The Wesmen held the Reds to a lowly .030 attack percentage in surrendering a season-low 31 total points.
Connor McConnell had seven kills to lead UNB.
The Wesmen will now have some time off before they get into their conference season Nov. 2-3 when they host the UBCO Heat. Winnipeg, which has a bye week for Week 1 of men's and women's volleyball, will also have a break in Week 2 due to a scheduling change that was precipitated by the folding of Regina's men's program in the summer.
