Despite overseeing a roster of 19 players for pre-season, head coach Larry McKay managed to get a checkmark next to each name in the team's first pre-season action this weekend.
All 19 players saw action over the course of four matches at the season-opening Brandon tournament, which wrapped up Sunday with the Wesmen knocking off Saskatchewan 3-1 (25-19, 25-23, 19-25, 29-27) for third place in the four-team event.
The Wesmen finished 3-1 over the course of three days, losing the opener to Brandon in straight sets, before beating Laval in five and Saskatchewan in four on Saturday.
In Sunday's match, Daniel Thiessen, Keegan Teetaert and Austin Anderson each had seven kills for Winnipeg. Eric Dornez, who redshirted in 2018-19 and saw his first court action this weekend, had five kills and finished the weekend with a team-leading 28 kills, McKay said.
"We got all 19 fo our pre-season roster on at least a single game sheet and first-year players were playing throughout," McKay said. "They managed to win more sets than they lost against some good university teams."
The Wesmen return home for a pair of non-conference games at Duckworth Centre against the Dalhousie Tigers Wednesday and Thursday. They'll then play in the Manitoba Bisons tournament Friday and Saturday with matches against Dal, McMaster and Manitoba.
