The Winnipeg Wesmen took down one of the nation's top teams from a season ago to capture the title at the Helen Campbell Women's Basketball Tournament Sunday morning in Fredericton, N.B.
Faith Hezekiah had her second straight double-double with 28 points and 12 rebounds to pace the Wesmen to a 69-64 win over the Laval Rouge et Or, the national runners-up from 2018-19.
Hezekiah, who also had three assists and three steals, was named tournament MVP and freshman Anna Kernaghan was named a tournament all-star after scoring 10 points with seven rebounds in the final.
The Wesmen led 17-11 after a quarter and took a 42-33 edge into halftime.
Winnipeg held Laval to 8-for-35 shooting from three and 33.8 per cent from the field.
Lena Wenke added nine points, six rebounds and four assists, her second straight game with a well-rounded contribution to a win.
"I think this weekend did a few good things for us," assistant coach, Alyssa Grant, who served as head coach for the weekend said. "It was our first opportunity to play together and we had learning moments in all three games. We are starting to build our team identity, and I hope the weekend and the win against Laval gives us confidence in the direction we are going."
Khaleann Goudreau led the Rouge et Or with 12 points and 14 rebounds.
