The Wesmen face their toughest early season challenge this weekend when the No. 6 ranked Regina Cougars bring their 4-0 record to the Duckworth Centre in a battle of undefeated squads. A weekend split between the No. 6 Wesmen and No. 5 Regina Cougars demonstrated the parity in the Great Plains Division of the Canada West Conference as Winnipeg, Manitoba and Regina are all tied with 4-4 records after weekend play. On Friday night the Wesmen prevailed over the Cougars with a 3-1 match victory. Saturday afternoon Regina returned the favour winning by the same 3-1 margin. 3rd year left side hitter Aynsley Laluk averaged 13 kills during weekend action. The Wesmen rebounded from a tough loss at home on Thursday, giving the Bisons a dose of their own medicine by winning on Manitoba’s home court on Saturday night. In front of 1700 fans on Thursday night at the Duckworth Centre, the Wesmen had a tough time finding their offensive groove and dropped a 67-62 decision to the Bisons. 3rd year forward Dave Brar had 15 points in a losing cause for Winnipeg. The second half of the home and home series was a different story as 2nd year Wesmen guard Aldin Smalling lit up the Bisons for 32 points at the Investors Group Athletic Centre. Brar added 10 points to help put Manitoba away. 3rd year forward Tosin Ospanubi was key in the Wesmen win as he held Bison guard Ryan Dulder to 20 points after Dulder struck for 33 on Thursday night. Winnipeg’s record improves to 1-3 in the Great Plains Division of the Canada West Conference. Men’s Volleyball After cruising to a dominant 3-0 match win on Friday night, where Wesmen coach Larry McKay emptied his bench after the first set, the Wesmen ran into a different Cougar team on Saturday evening. Winnipeg rallied from a 0-2 deficit, but ran out of steam in the fifth and deciding set, handing the 0-7 Cougars their first match win in conference play this season. McKay was complimentary of the spirited effort of the Regina team, but had a warning for his No. 4 ranked squad. |
