WESMEN NEWS FOR WEEK OF November 25 December 1/2002 HOME Nov. 30 Basketball vs. Brandon AWAY Nov. 28 Women’s and Men’s Basketball @ Brandon Nov. 29&30 Women's and Men's Volleyball @ Trinity Western Wesmen Athletes of the Week Aldin Smalling Men’s Basketball Headline: WESMEN TAME COUGARS The No. 1 Wesmen survived their stiffest challenge of the season by taking two games from the No. 6 ranked Regina Cougars at the Duckworth Centre on the weekend. Rookie guard Uzo Asagwara was the star of a run and gun show on Friday night hitting for 37 points, including five three-pointers, in a 91-86 victory. Asagwara was 15 for 21 from the field in 26 minutes of playing time and now owns the Wesmen Women’s single game scoring mark for a first-year player. Not to be outdone on Saturday night, 3rd year guard JoAnne Wells had herself quite a game as well, notching 33 points and hauling down 11 rebounds in a 62-57 win. 4th year guard Sally Kaznica averaged 9.5 points and 10 assists during weekend action. Kaznica leads the Canada West Conference with 6.5 assists per game. Wells is third in conference scoring with a 21.8 points per game average. Men’s Basketball Headline: HARD LUCK LOSS LEAVES WESMEN WITH A SPLIT Despite losing three players to injury during the game, including starters Dan Duggan and leading scorer Aldin Smalling, the Wesmen battled the No. 10 ranked Regina Cougars down to the wire only to come out on the losing end of an 88-86 score on Saturday night at the Duckworth Centre. Wesmen coach Dave Crook thought his team deserved better. The Wesmen will be short-handed when they take on the No. 5 ranked Brandon Bobcats this week. Both Duggan and Smalling will be unavailable due to injury, adding to a growing list of walking wounded for Winnipeg. After Thursday’s game in Brandon, the two teams meet again at the Duckworth Centre on Saturday night. Women’s Volleyball Headline: WESMEN WITHIN A WHISKER The Wesmen rebounded from a 3-0-match defeat at the hands of the No. 3 ranked Manitoba Bisons at the Duckworth Centre on Thursday, pushing Manitoba to the limit in a 3-2 loss at the Investors Group Athletic Centre on Saturday. A 16-14 score in the fifth set decided the hard-fought battle. After two weeks of sub-par performances Wesmen Coach Diane Scott decided to shake her team up on Thursday by introducing some new faces to the starting line-up. On Saturday night Winnipeg responded with much improved play. 3rd year middle hitter Andrea Charbonneau averaged 11.5 kills during the two game series, while 3rd year left side hitter Aynsley Laluk marked her return to the starting line-up with 17 kills and 11 digs on Saturday night. The No. 7 Wesmen Canada West record drops to 4-6. Headline: CROSS-TOWN RIVALS GET BETTER OF WESMEN The No. 6 Wesmen couldn’t top inter-city rivals the No. 2 ranked Manitoba Bisons during Canada West Men’s Volleyball action this past week. On Thursday night at the Duckworth Centre, Winnipeg went down to defeat 3-1. During the return engagement played at the Fort Garry campus, the Bisons again proved too much for the Wesmen winning by the same 3-1 score. The Wesmen were led by 2nd year outside hitter Dave Bishop, averaging 14.5 kills during the two game series. Coach Larry McKay’s Winnipeg squad is now 3-5 in Canada West play. |
