WESMEN HEAD INTO BREAK ON A WINNING NOTE

The No. 1 ranked Wesmen head into the exam break as the only undefeated team in the Canada West Conference after taking two games from the winless Brandon Bobcats last week. Saturday night at the Duckworth Centre Winnipeg coach Tanya McKay doled out substantial minutes to all her players and they responded with a convincing 62-42 victory. 2nd year forward Kate Daniels led the Wesmen with 11 points, while 2nd year guard Charmaine Izzard had herself a solid all-round game with 8 assists and 6 rebounds to go with her 3 points. On Thursday night in Brandon, the Bobcats had a little more fight in them, taking a 31-27 halftime lead before Winnipeg rallied and pushed ahead to eventually win the game by 72-55 score. 3rd year guard JoAnne Wells led the Wesmen with 23 points, 8 rebounds and 7 steals. Super frosh Uzo Asagwara pitched in 15 points to aid the Winnipeg cause. The next action for the Wesmen is in a month’s time when they play another home and home series with the same Brandon Bobcats, starting on January 3rd.

ONE FOR TWO ON THE WEST COAST

After taking the first match from Trinity Western on Friday night, the Spartans were in no mood to let the Wesmen escape with another victory on their home court. Trinity Western swept Winnipeg 3-0 (25-21, 25-19,25-21) on Saturday night giving them a split with the No. 7 ranked Wesmen. 3rd year middle hitter Andrea Charbonneau led Winnipeg with 9 kills and 7 digs while libero Kristy Fewchuck had 18 digs in the back row. On Friday night it was a much different story as a strong Wesmen start set the tone in a 3-1 (25-16,19-25, 25-18, 25-19) match victory. 3rd year left side hitter Aynsley

Laluk propelled the Wesmen attack with 13 kills, while Charbonneau added 10. Winnipeg finishes the first part of the season with a 5-7 record in the Canada West Conference. Their next action is January 3rd and 4th at the Toronto Invitational

BREAK COMES AT THE RIGHT TIME

Exam break couldn’t come at a better time for the Wesmen. A 3-2 match loss (20-25, 28-26, 25-23, 20-25, 16-14) to the No. 8 ranked Trinity Western on Saturday night gave the Spartans a weekend sweep of No. 6 Winnipeg. On Friday Trinity Western got the weekend series off on a winning note with a 3-1 decision (25-17, 25-23, 23-25, 25-17) over the Wesmen. In that match 2nd year outside hitter Dave Bishop’s 15 kills was tops for Winnipeg. In Saturday’s five-set heartbreaker, Wesmen 4th year opposite hitter Stephen Ens led all players with 25 kills. Winnipeg’s Canada West record now stands at 3-7. Coach Larry McKay’s Wesmen hope to regroup in time for their next action at home against the University of British Columbia on January 3rd & 4th.

DEPLETED ROSTER HAMPERS WESMEN

Missing two starters, including Canada West second leading scorer Aldin Smalling, the Wesmen just didn’t have the firepower to stay with the No. 4 ranked Brandon Bobcats. Starting post Dan Duggan also missed both games of the home and home series. Brandon won both encounters but the Wesmen didn’t go down without a fight. Saturday night at the Duckworth Centre after being down 52-39 at the half, Winnipeg closed the gap to within three with just over ten minutes left, before Brandon turned on the jets en route to a 92-73 victory. In a gutty performance, 3rd year Wesmen forward Tony Richter, playing with a stress fracture, had 19 rebounds to go with 17 points before fouling out. In the process Richter broke Wesmen legend Ken Opalko’s school record for offensive rebounds with 13. 3rd year forward Tosin Opanubi netted 18 to lead Winnipeg in scoring. In Brandon on Thursday night Brandon guard Nikosey Quick led the Bobcat attack with 24 points in a 101-76 victory. Rookie guard Erfan Nasajpour scored 15 to lead Winnipeg.
The Wesmen head into the break with a 2-6 record in Canada West Conference play, and 5-9 overall. The next action for Coach Dave Crook’s Winnipeg team is in the annual MTS Mobility Wesmen Classic at the Duckworth Centre from Dec.27-30th.
