Converse Junior Varsity Boys Basketball Classic
Red Division Championship
Miles Mac 45 Silver Heights 43
In an exciting Red Division Championship final of the Converse Junior Varsity Wesmen Classic played at the Duckworth Centre, the Miles Mac Buckeyes held off a determined Silver Heights Huskies squad to post a 45-43 win.
After an 8-0 Husky run tied the game at 43-43 with under two minutes left, Miles Mac’s Keenan Paul answered with a leaning jumper to put the Buckeyes up by two, and proving to be the difference in the victory. The win gives Miles Mac a berth in the Converse Junior Varsity Wesmen Classic final. The Buckeyes led 27-21 at the half and kept a gritty Silver Heights team in check until the late game Husky outburst. Miles Mac was led by Jordan Jaskiewicz and Jon Cade with 15 points each. Silver Heights got an 11-point effort from Craig Pemmiston. Miles Mac meets Sisler in the Junior Varsity final on December 29th at 10:45 am.
Black Division Championship
Sisler 53 River East 38
The Sisler Spartans stretched a three point half-time lead to ten with ten minutes left in the game and then cruised to a 53-38 win over the River East Kodiaks in the Black Division final of the Converse Junior Varsity Wesmen Classic at the Duckworth Centre. Xavier Smith dropped in a game-high 27 points to lead the Spartans to victory. River East was led by Brendan Olynik’s 10 points. Sisler now has a date with Red Division Champions Miles Mac to decide the overall winner of the Junior Varsity Classic on December 29th at 10:45 am at the Duckworth Centre.
Wesmen Classic Dec.27-30th
HIGH SCHOOL SECTION PREVIEW
The High School Varsity Boys Basketball Section of the 36th annual Wesmen Classic kicks off on December 27th at the Duckworth Centre and boasts six top-ten ranked teams including the No. 1 through No. 5 ranked squads. The action begins at 2 p.m. when the No. 2 Fort Richmond Centurions, take on the John Taylor Pipers and continues with three other games that day.
UNIVERSITY SECTION PREVIEW
The University Section of the 36th edition of the MTS Mobility Wesmen Classic features a bunch of players who can really fill it up. Eight of the top 20 scorers in the CIS will suit up in this year’s tournament. That includes No. 5, Guelph Gryphon star Mike Ayanbadejo, and two Lakehead gunners, Jeff Rosar and Dan Zapior, 6th and 7th in Canada respectively. It will be a very competitive tournament with the No. 6 ranked Alberta Golden Bears and No. 8 ranked Calgary Dinosaurs the top two contenders. Look for them to meet in an exciting semi-final match-up. And watch for a healthy Winnipeg squad, led by guard Aldin Smalling and CIS assist leader, rookie sensation Erfan Nasajpour, to challenge for a tournament final berth.
The Wesmen take on the Royal Military College in their opening match on December 28th at 6:30 p.m. The Paladins don’t figure to be a pushover and march into town looking for an upset with Kevin Delude, the top rebounder and 11th leading scorer in the CIS, front and centre for RMC.
Exhibition Women’s Hockey
On Saturday December 14th in Selkirk, the University of Winnipeg Club team shut out the University of Manitoba by a 3-0 score. Carla McMillan and Cheryl Wiens had goals for Winnipeg.
