January 20 to January 26 /2003 Women’s Volleyball WESMEN TAKE BIG BITE OUT OF BISONS The No. 8 ranked Wesmen parlayed a couple of solid efforts into a two-match sweep of cross-town rival No. 6 Manitoba last week. On Thursday night at the IGAC on the Fort Garry campus, the Wesmen won the first two sets, dropped the third and then rallied in the fourth for the victory. Left side hitter Aynsley Laluk fueled the Winnipeg attack with 13 kills, while middle hitter Andrea Charbonneau and left side hitter Jocelyn Roy added 11 more each. On Saturday night the Wesmen Women did their part in the Duckworth Challenge by dispatching the Bisons again in another 3-1 victory. This time Winnipeg dropped the first set before storming back to take the next three. The victories were crucial for the 8-8 fifth place Wesmen, as they jockey for playoff position in the Canada West Conference. As it stands spots 4 through 6 (the top six teams make the playoffs) currently occupied by Manitoba, Winnipeg and Regina are still up for grabs with 7th place Saskatchewan still in the hunt as well. Each team has four matches remaining, except for the Bisons who have only two. The Wesmen take on No. 1 ranked UBC, coached by former Wesmen bench boss Doug Reimer, in two big matches at the Duckworth Centre this weekend. Women’s Basketball WIN SNAPS MINI LOSING STREAK The No. 4 Wesmen put an end to a three-game losing skid with a victory over No. 6 Regina on Saturday night. Guard JoAnne Wells got Winnipeg back on track with 25 points, while Heidi Schwartz added 16 and Janet Wells chipped in 12 in the 64-59 victory. On Friday night the Cougars made it three losses in a row for the Wesmen knocking off Winnipeg 83-75. Schwartz was tops on the scoresheet for Winnipeg with a 27 point, 5 assist and 3 steal line. JoAnne Wells supplied 21 more points to the Wesmen total. The two game split leaves Winnipeg with an 11-3 record in the Great Plains Division of Canada West. As division leaders they currently hold down the number two seed in play off positioning with six games remaining. The Wesmen travel to Saskatoon to take on the Saskatchewan Huskies this weekend. Men’s Volleyball WESMEN COME UP SHORT AGAINST BISONS The No. 7 ranked Wesmen put up a good effort against a tough No. 2 ranked Manitoba Bison squad this past week. On Saturday night in the final game of the Duckworth Challenge, the Wesmen gave the Bisons everything they could handle in a 3-1 defeat. Outside hitter Dave Bishop used a 13-kill performance to land himself Duckworth Challenge Player of the Game. Libero Shawn Scarcello led both teams in digs with 14, eliciting praise from Manitoba coach Garth Pischke. Earlier in the week the Wesmen dropped a 3-0 decision to the Bisons. Opposite side hitter Stephen Ens picked up 14 kills and 6 digs in a losing effort. With four matches remaining the Wesmen currently sit in 5th place in the Canada West Conference with a 6-10 record and 12 points. And things don’t get any easier for Winnipeg with No. 9 ranked Calgary in for a pair of matches this weekend. The Dinos are right behind the Wesmen with 10 points and are hoping to ride the performance of Denis Zukov, last year’s CIS player of the year to a couple of wins over the Winnipeg. Men’s Basketball COUGARS KEEP WESMEN AT BAY The Wesmen found themselves on the losing end of both contests with the Great Plains Division leading Regina Cougars this past weekend. On Friday night an offensive outburst fromthe run and gun Cougars left Winnipeg breathing fumes in a 108-83 loss. Post Dan Duggan led the way for the Wesmen with 17 points and 5 rebounds. Freshman guard Erfan Nasajpour added 15 points. During the second encounter things weren’t much better for the Wesmen as Regina again came out on top 77-60. Duggan was top scorer for Winnipeg dropping in 25 points. Winnipeg falls to 5-9 in the division with six games remaining, but sit safely in third place, owning the final play off position, with 1-13 Manitoba a distant memory. The Wesmen travel west to Saskatoon to take on a Husky squad battling for a post-season spot in the Mountain Division. |
