January 27 to February 2 /2003 Women’s Volleyball WESMEN GIVE UBC ALL THEY CAN HANDLE… AND MORE The No. 6 ranked Wesmen secured themselves a Canada West playoff spot by taking one of two matches from the top ranked UBC Thunderbirds on the weekend. On Friday night at the Duckworth Centre Winnipeg dropped the first set but stormed back to take the next three in a 3-1 victory over a veteran Thunderbird squad. Left side hitter Jocelyn Roy continued with her strong play notching 16 kills and 13 digs in the exciting win. Left side hitter Aynsley Laluk pitched in with 14 more kills, while middle hitter Andrea Charbonneau added 12. Right side hitter Amy Matthews picked a fine time for one of her best performances of the season with 19 digs to lead both teams. On Saturday night the Thunderbirds needed five sets to put a pesky Wesmen squad away, hanging on for an 18-16 final set victory. Charbonneau clocked in with 17 kills, 13 digs and 3 stuff blocks to lead Winnipeg, while Laluk chipped in with 16 kills and 14 digs. Coach Diane Scott’s 9-9 team sits in fifth place heading into Saskatchewan for the final two matches of the season. Women’s Basketball SASKATCHEWAN SPLIT The No. 4 Wesmen rode the workmanlike performance of forward Janet Wells to a 56-51 win over the Saskatchewan Huskies on Saturday night, salvaging a weekend split. Wells notched herself a double-double, picking up 14 points and 14 rebounds in the victory. Guard Heidi Schwartz led the Winnipeg attack with 18 points. Guard JoAnne Wells sat out the game due to injury. On Friday night, the Wesmen found themselves up against a feisty Husky club and fell to the hometown team 68-53. Guards Sally Kaznica and Uzo Asagwara each had 10 points for Winnipeg. After weekend play Winnipeg still sit atop the Great Plains Division with a 12-4 record. The Wesmen also own the No. 2 seeding for the Canada West playoffs. Winnipeg plays at home against a very good 11-5 Victoria Vikings team this weekend. Men’s Basketball WESMEN GO HALFERS WITH HUSKIES The Wesmen couldn’t build on the momentum of a Friday night victory, dropping Saturday’s return engagement with the Saskatchewan Huskies. On Friday night, propelled by guard Aldin Smalling’s 27 points and 17 more from post Dan Duggan, Winnipeg handled the Huskies on their home court 77-69. In the second contest it was a different story as Saskatchewan rebounded for an 84-75 victory. Smalling again led the Wesmen with 21 points and 9 rebounds, while backcourt partner Erfan Nasajpour added 18 points, 6 rebounds and 6 assists. The Wesmen are now at 6-10 on the year, but have a Great Plains Division playoff spot sewn up with four games remaining in the regular season. Winnipeg takes on a 6-10 Victoria Vikings squad battling for a post season berth at the Duckworth Centre on the weekend. Men’s Volleyball DINOS DAMAGE WESMEN PLAYOFF HOPES The No. 7 Wesmen suffered a couple of heartbreaking losses to the No. 9 Calgary Dinosaurs on the weekend. The Wesmen went into the series needing one match win to land a Canada West playoff spot. In a great match at the Duckworth Centre on Friday night, where every Calgary set win was matched by a Winnipeg one, it came down to a final fifth set battle, where the Dinos emerged on the better end of a 19-17 score. Opposite side hitter Stephen Ens led the Wesmen charge with 16 kills and 7 digs, while middle hitter Cam Dobie chipped in with 11 more kills and added 3 stuff blocks. Saturday night, a less confident Winnipeg team went down to defeat 3-1 at the hands of a Dino squad feeding off of Friday night’s match win momentum. Ens again led the way for the Wesmen with 18 kills and 8 digs and teammate Dave Bishop provided 12 kills and 9 digs from his outside hitter position. Shawn Scarcello again showed why he is one of the best in the CIS at the libero position by averaging 12 digs per contest. The Wesmen now sit at 6-12 in Canada Conference play, occupying the 6th and final playoff position. But the Wesmen head into the final weekend of the regular season needing both wins against a top-ranked Saskatchewan squad to qualify. UBC, currently sitting in 7th place, can leap-frog Winnipeg if they win both their remaining matches and Winnipeg is swept. |
