February 3 to February 9 /2003 Women’s Volleyball BRING ON THE DINOS! The No. 6 ranked Wesmen locked up fourth place in the Canada West Conference by sweeping the Saskatchewan Huskies in Saskatoon on the weekend. Winnipeg rode the 17 kill, 2 stuff block performance of Andrea Charbonneau to a 3-1 win on Friday night. Left side hitter Jocelyn Roy added 11 kills, 1 stuff block and 9 digs, while left side hitter Aynsley Laluk supplied 10 more kills and 2 stuff blocks in the victory. In the next night’s encounter the result was the same as Winnipeg again downed Saskatchewan 3-1. Charbonneau was front and centre for Winnipeg with 15 kills and 6 digs in the return engagement. Laluk and Roy provided 10 kills and setter Talitha Lemoine orchestrated the Wesmen attack with 40 assists. Winnnipeg’s fourth place finish earns them a date with the No. 4 ranked Calgary Dinos in the first round of the Canada West post season. The best of three series takes place at the University of Calgary on the weekend. Women’s Basketball HANGIN’ TOUGH The No. 6 Wesmen, playing without injured scoring leader JoAnne Wells, managed a weekend split with the No.5 ranked Victoria Vikes in Canada West Women’s Basketball played at the Duckworth Centre. Winnipeg capitalized on Victoria’s poor shooting performance to knock off the Vikes 53-39 on Friday night. Guard Sally Kaznica’s two 3-pointers pushed a four-point Winnipeg lead at half-time to a double-digit lead five minutes into the second frame and the Wesmen never looked back in the important win. Kaznica led the way for Winnipeg with 16 points and 5 rebounds. Freshman Uzo Asagwara chipped in 11 points to go with 4 rebounds and forward Janet Wells added 9 points and 6 boards. On Saturday night Victoria returned the favour keeping the Wesmen in check with near flawless free throw shooting resulting in a 59-51 win. Guard Charmaine Izzard was all over the floor defensively for the Wesmen and led the red and black with 14 points and 9 rebounds. Kaznica pitched in with 11 more points in a losing cause. The split leaves Winnipeg with a 13-5 record, with the 12-6 Regina Cougars breathing down their necks as regular season comes to a close. Two wins over this weekend’s opponent the Alberta Golden Bears - would lock up first place in the Great Plains Division and land the Wesmen the No. 2 seed in the Canada West Conference playoffs and home court advantage in the first round of the post season the following week. Men’s Basketball WESMEN AND VIKES CALL IT EVEN The Wesmen took one of two games from the Victoria Vikes in Canada West Men’s Basketball action at the Duckworth Centre on the weekend. First year phenom Erfan Nasajpour chalked up a 25 point, 5 assist, 5 rebound line as Victoria couldn’t handle an up tempo Wesmen club in a 75-60 win on Friday night. Back court mate Aldin Smalling added 17 points, 7 boards and 3 steals, while 5th year post Dan Duggan pitched in with 14 points, 12 in the second half, in the 15 point victory. In the second contest things were different as Vikes used a solid post-up game to grab a 73-64 win and earn a series split. Winnipeg got 22 points and 5 boards from Smalling and forward Dave Brar supplied 19 more in a losing effort. The Wesmen are now at 7-11 on the season, and the team will find out this weekend whether it will travel to Brandon or Regina for the first round of the Canada West playoffs. Winnipeg entertains the No. 3 ranked Alberta Golden Bears in a re-match of the Wesmen Classic final this weekend. Game time for both games is 8:00 pm. Men’s Volleyball SEASON ENDS ON A SOUR NOTE The No. 9 Wesmen finished out of the Canada West Conference playoffs after losing two matches to the No. 3 Saskatchewan Huskies in Saskatoon on the weekend. Both matches ended in 3-0 outcomes, spelling a disappointing end to the season for Winnipeg. Chris Ward led the Wesmen with 7 kills on Friday night and Stephen Ens finished with 10 kills the following evening. The Wesmen finish the season with a 6-14 mark in the competitive Canada West Conference, a point behind UBC and the sixth and final post season berth, after capturing the silver medal in last year’s National Championships. Five of the six teams that made the Canada West playoffs are ranked nationally in the top ten including seeds No. 1 Alberta, No. 2 Manitoba and No. 3 Saskatchewan. |
