A RETURN TRIP TO THE NATIONALS!

The Wesmen Women’s basketball team is heading back to Hamilton after qualifying for the Nationals during the Canada West Conference Final Four on the weekend. The No. 5 ranked Wesmen won their opening game by beating the Victoria Vikes 76-62 on Friday night, setting up a battle for the championship with No. 1 Simon Fraser on Saturday. 3rd year forward and First Team Canada West All-star JoAnne Wells led the way for the Wesmen with a double-double, 24 points and 11 rebounds. Guards Heidi Schwartz and Sally Kaznica chipped in with 16 points each for Winnipeg, who out-rebounded Victoria 37-22 while shooting 50% from the field. In Saturday night’s final the Wesmen took it on the chin from No. 1 Simon Fraser, who used a stifling defense to limit Winnipeg to 25% shooting in a 76-50 victory. JoAnne and Janet Wells had 11 points each for the Wesmen and Janet had 6 rebounds as well.
The Wesmen get the week off before heading to Hamilton and McMaster University for the CIS Nationals from March 7-10, where they hope to get another crack at SFU and to build on their bronze medal win of a year ago.

WESMEN TO FACE LAVAL IN OPENING GAME OF NATIONALS

The Wesmen Women’s Volleyball team, along with seven more of the best teams in the country is off the Laval this week for the CIS Nationals. Winnipeg’s first game is against the home team Laval Rouge et Or on Friday night at 6:00 pm. No. 2 ranked Laval needed five sets, including a 15-13 final set thriller, to knock off upstart the No. 6 Wesmen in the University of Toronto Invitational Tournament in the beginning of January. Coach Diane Scott’s young squad has had a good week of practice leading up to the Nationals and are looking to make a good impression in their first trip to championship tournament in 7 years.
“It’s a big step for the program for us to get there,” said Coach Diane Scott. “There’s no guarantee to qualify for the playoffs or to get to Nationals. The competition is so great across the country and especially in Canada West and it makes it a great accomplishment.”
But the Wesmen won't be satisfied with just showing up and are hoping to catch a Laval team that might be looking beyond them on Friday night.
“We need a team effort to beat the top teams – and when we play together we are so much stronger,” said Scott. Winnipeg practises Monday and Tuesday before flying out to Quebec City on Wednesday.
