March 3 to March 10 /2003 Women’s Volleyball SILVER MEDAL JUST THE BEGINNING! With quiet assurances to each other of “We’ll be back” while watching Sherbrooke celebrate their CIS Championship on Sunday afternoon, the Wesmen are already looking ahead to next season buoyed by their silver medal performance in the CIS Women’s Volleyball National Championship on the weekend. Coach Diane Scott’s young and upcoming team without any fourth or fifth year players served notice that they will be a force to be reckoned with in the coming years. Making a return to the Nationals for the first time in seven years, the seventh seeded Wesmen were given little hope of advancing past No. 2 seed and home town favourites Laval in their opening match on Friday. But an attack orchestrated by setter Talitha Lemoine, named Player of the Game for her 44 assists, proved to be too much for Laval as they were shut out 3-0 to quiet a gym full of enthusiastic fans. Middle blocker Andrea Charbonneau had 14 kills and left side hitter Jocelyn Roy picked up 17 digs in the upset victory. The next night in the semi-final Winnipeg continued to roll with 3-1 victory over Canada West rival Calgary. Charbonneau again led the way with 26 kills, while Player of the Game Aynsley Laluk had 17 kills and 18 digs in an excellent all-round performance. Roy led the way defensively with 22 digs as the Wesmen knocked off a higher seeded team for the second night in a row. On Sunday afternoon however, Winnipeg ran into a hot Sherbrooke Vert et Or sqaud, parlaying some solid play at the net into the first ever CIS Women’s Volleyball Championship for a Quebec university and breaking a 20 year run for Canada West Conference teams. Charbonneau was tops again for the Wesmen with 11 kills, while Kristen Brisebois had 7 blocks and Roy another 12 digs. Charbonneau and Roy were named tournament All-stars for their efforts and Lemoine was picked as the Most Sportsmanlike Player of the competition for her demeanor on the court. Women’s Basketball WESMEN TO BATTLE HOME TEAM IN OPENING GAME OF NATIONALS The Wesmen Women’s Basketball team is ranked fourth for this upcoming weekend’s National Championship tournament and face hometown favourites and fifth seed McMaster in their opening game on Saturday at 7:00 pm. The tournament runs March 8-10th. “The seeding committee did an excellent job in avoiding any in-conference match-ups in the opening round,” said Wesmen coach Tanya McKay. Simon Fraser heads into the tournament ranked No. 1 and is followed by Laval, Memorial and Winnipeg. McMaster, Victoria, Queens and Wilfrid Laurier round out the eight-team field. McKay is looking forward to the challenge of playing the Maurauders in their home gym. |
