The Wesmen had a taste of what the top teams in the country were dishing out at this past weekend’s CJOB/Power 97 Invitational Tournament. The Wesmen fell to both the University of Saskatchewan and eventual tournament champion Alberta on Friday – but bounced back winning their next three matches including a 3-1 victory over Montreal in the 5th place game. Coach Larry McKay felt his team was inconsistent during the tournament but believes his squad now knows what they are up against in the coming season.

“We got what we needed – some high quality matches that allowed us to measure ourselves against some good teams,” said McKay. “It’s an indication of the level we have to get to when we play Alberta to start the Can West season.” Alberta beat Manitoba 3-1 in the tournament final on Sunday afternoon.

This Week:
This weekend the Wesmen travel to Edmonton for the Can-Am Challenge Tournament at the University of Alberta. For the second consecutive weekend the Wesmen will be put to the test against some of the best teams in the country.

The Wesmen wrapped up their side of the CJOB/Power 97 Invitational Tournament taking home the match play championship with a 3-1 win over Western in their final match on Sunday.

“We accomplished our goal – which was to go 5-0,” said Coach Diane Scott. Overall Scott was happy with her team’s play on the weekend and believes the maturity and growth shown on the court will set the tone for the upcoming regular season. A particular highlight was a hard fought five set victory over defending Can West Champion the University of Calgary. Aynsley Laluk and Andrea Charbonneau led the team with impressive performances on the weekend. Charbonneau finished with a near 50% kill ratio for the tournament and Laluk wasn’t far behind clocking in at 30%. Charbonneau was also named top blocker in the tournament and Laluk was named the Niki Redekop Memorial Player’s Choice Award winner.

This Week:
The team will continue to practice in preparation for its Canada West Opening Series against the University of Calgary at the Duckworth Centre on October 25&26.
