Led by the Wells sisters, the Wesmen finished the Converse Shoot-Out Tournament with an unblemished 3-0 record. 3rd year guard JoAnne averaged 22 ppg/7 reb/4 steals during the weekend competition landing her the MVP award. 4th year forward Janet had 13 points and 6 rebounds in the final game and was chosen the Defensive Player of the Tournament. The Wesmen used an up-tempo style and full court pressure defense to overwhelm their opponents. Coach Tanya McKay’s team was nervous starting the season in front of a home crowd, contributing to some expected early season inconsistency, but settled down enough to reel off three convincing wins. McKay also issued a good dose of court time to all her players and was impressed by a number of good performances.

This Week:
The team is off this weekend but will continue to practice in anticipation of their next tournament at the University of Manitoba on the weekend of Oct. 25-27.

Coach Larry McKay’s Wesmen were in Edmonton tangling with some of the best NCAA Volleyball teams this weekend at the University of Alberta’s Can-Am Challenge tournament. The Wesmen played well taking one of their matches – knocking off the University of California-Santa Barbara – but were on the losing end against UCLA, Pepperdine and Brigham Young. Wesmen Dave Bishop led the team with 48 kills and was chosen a tournament All-Star. The CIS and NCAA squads ended up tied at eight match wins at the end of the competition, but sets won was used as a tie breaker and the Canadian schools came out on top 33-28.

This Week: The next weekend is competition free for the Wesmen but they will continue preparing for a return visit to Edmonton on Oct. 25&26 to battle the University of Alberta.

The Wesmen get their first taste of CIS competition during the Bison Invitational Tournament on Thursday and Friday. “It will be interesting to get going,” says coach Dave Crook. “The athletes are excited to test their skills in real competition.” Wesmen fans planning on attending those games are reminded of a schedule change. The games listed on the Wesmen pocket schedule are incorrect due to a last minute change by the Bison tournament organizers. Winnipeg plays Lakehead on Thursday at 6:15 pm @ University of Manitoba and then travel to Brandon on Friday where they will take on the Saskatchewan Huskies at 6:15 pm. On Oct. 25&26 the Wesmen host the Midway Chrysler Invitational Tournament at the Duckworth Centre.
