WESMEN PIZZA PLACE PLAYERS OF THE WEEK

The Wesmen Pizza Place Male and Female Players of the Week are:
Erfan Nasajpour, men’s basketball – Erfan, a second year guard & Junior National team member was named a tournament all-star at this past weekend’s Golden Hawk Tournament at Laurier University in Waterloo, Ontario.

Heather Thompson, women’s basketball – Heather was named the MVP of the University of Manitoba Invitational tournament this past weekend. Heather averaged 15 ppg, 12 rpg, and 4 steals in leading the Wesmen to a perfect 3-0 record.

GENERAL WESMEN NEWS
The annual Midway Chrysler Invitational Men’s Basketball Tournament will be taking place this Friday and Saturday evening at the Duckworth Centre. The host Wesmen will be challenging teams Douglas College from Vancouver and University College of Fraser Valley from Abbottsford.

The 18th annual Midway Chrysler Basketball Coaches Clinic will be taking place from Wednesday October 20 – Saturday October 23 at the Duckworth Centre. Our very own Wesmen basketball coaches Dave Crook and Tanya McKay will be holding open practices and discussions with basketball coaches from across the city. On Friday five presentations by selected coaches will be given between 9:00 am – 3:00 pm. Interested coaches can register at the door.

The Manitoba Association of Basketball Officials (MABO) will be holding their Super Clinic 2004 at the Duckworth Centre on Friday October 22 and Saturday October 23. The clinic will feature NCAA official Steve Welmer, Canada West Coordinator of Officials Bill Crowley and CABO National Evaluator Bill Carr.

The University of Winnipeg will be presenting the “ Dare to Dream” Breakfast Celebrating Women in Sport on Tuesday, December 7th, 2004 from 7:15 am – 8:30 am at the Radisson Hotel Winnipeg Downtown 288 Portage Avenue. Tickets are $35.00 with proceeds benefiting the Women’s Basketball and Volleyball Teams Athletic Scholarship Fund. For tickets please call 786-9349.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL
Coach Tanya McKay and her squad traveled across town this past weekend to participate in the University of Manitoba Invitational Tournament. The Wesmen were a perfect 3-0 at the tournament as they defeated teams from Concordia (89-80), Western (62-46) and their cross- town rivals Manitoba(75 –69). Forward Heather Thompson was named MVP of the tournament. Fifth year player JoAnne Wells was named a tournament all-star.

MEN’S BASKETBALL
The team finally faced some competition this past weekend as they traveled to Waterloo, Ontario to participate in the Golden Hawk Invitational Tournament. The team played hard in both games but were on the losing side as they fell to the host Wilfred Laurier (88-53) and York (79-69). Guard Erfan Nasajpour had a great tournament as he was named a tournament all-star.

WOMEN’S VOLLEYBALL
The Wesmen had a tough weekend in Fargo, North Dakota as they took on the NDSU Bisons in a pair of weekend matches. On Friday the Wesmen were up two sets but they eventually fell to the Bison’s in five tough sets (30-18, 30-28, 20-30, 29-31, 12-15). On Saturday the Wesmen fell in three straight games to the NDSU alumni team.

MEN’S VOLLEYBALL
Coach Larry McKay and his team will be travelling to Brandon and Glenboro for a pair of exhibition matches against Regina. On Tuesday the team will stop at Portage Collegiate Institute in Portage La Prarie for a practice session and clinic for students in the area.
