WESMEN PIZZA PLACE PLAYERS OF THE WEEK

The Wesmen Pizza Place Male and Female Players of the Week are:

Jarrod Small, men’s volleyball - Jarrod helped the Wesmen beat Dalhousie in two out of three matches in last weekend’s Prairie- Atlantic Challenge. Jarrod averaged 11 kills per match and provided strong net play for the Wesmen.

Uzo Asagwara, women’s basketball - Uzo averaged 22 points in helping the Wesmen defeat Memorial University in three straight games in last weekend’s Prairie- Atlantic Challenge. Uzo’s clutch scoring led to her scoring the winning basket on Saturday night with three seconds left in the game.

GENERAL WESMEN NEWS

The University of Winnipeg Wesmen will be presenting “ Uniform Give-Away Night” on Wednesday, November 10th, 2004. That night the Wesmen host the University of Manitoba Bisons. One lucky team will win a set of basketball uniforms. Free admission is available by advance reservation only. The “Dare to Dream” Breakfast Celebrating Women in Sport will be taking place on Tuesday, December 7th, 2004 from 7:15 a.m. - 8:30 a.m. at the Radisson Hotel Winnipeg Downtown 288 Portage Avenue. The keynote speaker of the event will be Rhiannon Leier, a member of the Canadian National Swim Team and a participant in the Sydney and Athens Olympics. Tickets are $35.00 with proceeds benefiting the Women’s Basketball and Volleyball Teams Athletic Scholarship Fund. For tickets please call 786-9349.

The International Basketball Classic will be taking place at the Duckworth Centre on December 17 - December 19th, 2004. This tournament is open to all grades 6-12 club teams across Canada and the United States. WOMEN’S BASKETBALL
The Wesmen wrapped up their pre-season schedule by defeating the Memorial University Sea-Hawks in three straight games at the Prairie -Atlantic Challenge. On Friday night the Wesmen defeated the Sea-Hawks 76-65 with JoAnne Wells leading the team with 26 points. Uzo Asagwara contributed 18 points in the victory. On Saturday night Uzo Agagwara scored the winning basket with three seconds left in the game to give the Wesmen a 76-75 win. Asagwara had 18 points and JoAnne Wells had 22 points in this game. On Sunday afternoon the Wesmen took their show to John Taylor Collegiate and defeated the Sea-Hawks 83-74 with Uzo Asagwara leading the way scoring 30 points. The team will open up their regular season at home this weekend against the University of Regina Cougars.

MEN’S BASKETBALL
The Men’s team traveled across town to take part in the Applebee’s Invitational at the University of Manitoba. The Wesmen got off to a rocky start falling 78-64 Friday night against the Brandon Bobcats. Dan Shynkaryk led the Wesmen with 17 points in the loss. On Saturday the Wesmen came out firing on all cylinders as they defeated the Grand Forks Air Base Warriors 122-108. Erfan Nasajpour and Dan Shynkaryk led the way with 27 points each. The team will open up their regular season at home on November 10th vs the University of Manitoba Bisons.

MEN’S VOLLEYBALL
The Wesmen took part in the Prairie-Atlantic Challenge over the weekend. The Wesmen won two out of three matches against Dalhousie University. On Thursday the two teams traveled to River East High School for the match that saw the Wesmen win 3-0 (25-22, 25-20, 25-22). On Friday at the Duckworth Centre Dalhousie University got some revenge as they defeated the Wesmen 3-1In a very close and exciting match the scores were (29-27, 17-25, 25-22, 25-23). Player of the week Jarrod Small led the Wesmen with 14 kills while Ben Schellenberg and Martin Rochon contributed with 13 and 12 kills respectively.

On Saturday the Wesmen concluded the “challenge” by defeating Dalhousie 3-1(19-25, 25-18, 25-20, 26-24). Ben Schellenberg led the way for the Wesmen by pounding 18 kills. The team will open up 2004-2005 regular season this weekend against the Bisons at the University of Manitoba.

WOMEN’S VOLLEYBALL
The Wesmen Women’s volleyball team opened up their 2004-2005 regular season in Calgary. Unfortunately the Dinos defeated the Wesmen on both nights. On Thursday the Dinos defeated the Wesmen 3-1 (25-23, 25-13, 17-25, 25-22). Fifth year player Andrea Charbonneau had 12 kills in the match while Jocelyne Roy had 13 digs to go along with 10 kills. On Friday night the Dinos were once again more than the Wesmen could handle as they won the match 3-1(25-17, 29-27, 19-25, 25-18). Jocelyne Roy was the top player in defeat with 14 kills and 12 digs. Aynsley Laluk also had a strong match with 12 kills and 12 digs. The team will next see action this weekend as they travel across town to take on the Bisons at the University of Manitoba.
