The Wesmen’s early season play has earned them the number five spot in the national rankings. Coach Larry McKay hopes to improve on that posting when his team opens their Canada West regular season against number one Alberta on the weekend in Edmonton. McKay believes the early season ranking is a bonus because he has had to go to his bench more than anticipated early in the year.
“We’ve had some injuries and illness which resulted in several of our younger players getting valuable playing time,” said McKay.

There were no games scheduled during the week and Coach Diane Scott says the team had a good week of practice.

The Wesmen are hoping the confidence gained from a victory over defending Canada West Champions Calgary earlier this month at the CJOB/Power 97 Invitational will translate into a pair of wins on the weekend. It is the Canada West opening series for the team and a good start to the regular season would give the team a leg up in the competitive conference. Matches are Friday and Saturday at 4 p.m. at the Duckworth Centre.

The Men’s Basketball team had their first taste of CIS competition with a pair of games at the Bison Invitational last week. The Wesmen started well with a 90-78 victory over Lakehead on Thursday at the University of Manitoba. On Friday in Brandon, after spotting the University of Saskatchewan a 27 point half time lead, Winnipeg roared back to get within 3 points with four minutes left, but the Huskies held them off and hung on for a 92-81 win. First year guard Erfan Nasajpour had quite a debut for the Wesmen, averaging 18 points and 9.5 assists in his first two university games. 2nd year guard Aldin Smalling had 22 points and 3 steals in Friday’s game against Saskatchewan.
