Jarrod Small, men’s volleyball - For the 4th time this season Jarrod has been chosen as Player of the Week for this exceptional and steady play in helping the Wesmen to a weekend sweep of the Regina Cougars. Jarrod averaged 7 kills a match and also came up with great defensive efforts all weekend.
Kristin Brisebois, women’s volleyball - Named Player of the Week for the first time this season. Kristin helped the Wesmen sweep the Regina Cougars this past weekend with solid defense, great serving and exceptional blocking.
GENERAL WESMEN NEWS
The University of Winnipeg Wesmen will be hosting their annual “Shoe Give-Away-Night” on Saturday December 4th as the Wesmen men’s team will host the University of Regina Cougars. Each team member in attendance will receive a ballot for a chance to win 12 pairs of basketball shoes for their team compliments of Converse Canada, Winnipeg Outfitters and the Wesmen. The International Basketball Classic will be taking place at the Duckworth Centre on December 17 - December 19th, 2004. This tournament is open to all grades 3-12 club teams across Canada and the United States. WOMEN’S VOLLEYBALL
The Wesmen Women’s Volleyball Team is on a roll. The Wesmen are now riding an eight match winning streak after sweeping their weekend series against the University of Regina Cougars. On Friday night the Wesmen defeated the Cougars 3-0 (25-17,25-20,25-20). The Wesmen were led by Jocelyne Roy with 13 kills while Andrea Charbonneau had a monster of a game coming up with 10 kills and 15 digs. On Saturday night the Wesmen once again dominated this time defeating the Cougars 3-1 (25-13, 21-25, 25-17, 25-22). Andrea Charbonneau and Aynsley Laluk were dynamic by pounding 17 and 15 kills respectively. The team now has a record of 8-2 and won’t see action until January 7th, 2005 when they travel to Simon Fraser.
MEN’S VOLLEYBALL
The Wesmen Men’s Volleyball Team had a great weekend by sweeping their series against the University of Regina Cougars. On Friday night the Wesmen defeated the Cougars 3-0 (25-22,25-20,25-19). Second year player Trevor Shaw led the Wesmen on this night with 11 kills while Martin Rochon had a great defensive match coming up with 8 digs. On Saturday the Wesmen went for the sweep and got it by winning the match 3-0 (25-15,25-19,28-26). Once again the Wesmen dominated with Martin Rochon leading the way with 9 kills. The men’s team now has a record of 4-4 and will try to get above .500 as they travel to Calgary to take on the Dinos this weekend.
WOMEN’S BASKETBALL
The Wesmen Women’s Basketball team remains a perfect 8-0 on the 2004-2005 regular season. The team beat the Brandon Bobcats twice this week both times with out star players JoAnne Wells and Heather Thompson who were resting minor injuries. On Thursday at the Duckworth Centre 2000 fans showed up to cheer the Wesmen to a 75-42 victory with Kate Daniels scoring 17 points and grabbing 8 rebounds to lead the Wesmen. On Saturday the team traveled to Brandon and continued where they left off on Thursday by thrashing the Bobcats 66-33 with Uzo Asagwara scoring 16 points and Stefanie Timmersman grabbing 10 rebounds. The team will now have a few weeks off and then travel to the Maritimes for some exhibition games.
MEN’S BASKETBALL
The struggles continue for Dave Crook’s squad. The team played hard in their two games against the Brandon Bobcats but came out on the losing end on both games. On Thursday at the Duckworth Centre the Wesmen ran into a hot shooting Bobcat team and never had a chance as they dropped an 88-66 decision to the Bobcats. Tony Richter led the Wesmen with 12 points and seven rebounds. On Saturday in Brandon the team played much better but fell just short by a score of 98-93 in Brandon’s favor. Erfan Nasajpour led the Wesmen with 26 points while Tony Richter chipped in with 17 points. The team will try to get their first win of the regular season as they host the Regina Cougars in a pair of games starting Friday night at the Duckworth Centre.
