WESMEN PIZZA PLACE PLAYERS OF THE WEEK

JoAnne Wells, women’s basketball - JoAnne averaged over 25 points in three games as the Wesmen won the University of Saint Mary’s Huskies Holiday Tournament in Halifax. JoAnne was named tournament M.V.P. for her great play in the tournament.

Erfan Nasajpour, men’s basketball - Erfan averaged over 25 points in leading the Wesmen to three wins to win the Wesmen Classic. Erfan was named the Wesmen Classic M.V.P. for his outstanding play in the tournament.

GENERAL WESMEN NEWS
There ain’t no pills to cure your ills when you have December Madness…Wesmen Style. While the Wesmen student athletes are busy studying and writing exams, the Duckworth Centre becomes a hive of activity for volleyball and basketball players of all sizes, shapes and ages. Literally thousands of athletes, their families and friends and fans enjoy their December Madness Wesmen Style. A quick glance at the numbers show why the Duckworth Centre is Canada’s home of basketball and volleyball.

Dec. 6 - 9 The Winnipeg Free Press Community Basketball Classic
32 teams over four days, ages 11-14 500 participants

Dec. 10 -11 The Converse Junior Varsity Boy’s Basketball Classic
16 teams over two days, ages 14-15 250 participants

Dec. 13 -14 The Radisson High School Girl’s Basketball Classic
4 teams over two days, ages 16-17 100 participants

Dec. 17 The MPI Inner City Junior High Basketball Clinic
1 day, ages 12-13 60 participants

Dec .17- 19 The International Classic Boys and Girls Basketball
34 teams over three days, ages 9-15 520 participants

Dec.16,17,20,21 The Seven Oaks School Division Jr. High Volleyball Tournaments

8 teams over 4 days ages 16-17 120 participants

8 teams over 3 days ages 18+ 120 participants

Totals 2270 participants and at least 20,000 family members, friends, and fans. Truly December Madness at the University of Winnipeg’s Duckworth Centre.

Speaking of big events the 2005 Radisson Hotel Winnipeg Downtown Women’s Basketball National Championships will take place at the Duckworth Centre from March 11 -13, 2005. Tournament passes are $30.00 and available at Duckworth Centre Customer Service Centre.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL
The Wesmen women’s basketball team traveled out to Halifax to take part in the Saint Mary’s Huskies Holiday Invitational Tournament. The team showed why they are ranked numbers two in the country as they came away with the tournament championship. In the first game the Wesmen defeated Dalhousie 65-51 with JoAnne Wells scoring 16 points and outstanding rookie Jenny Ezirim scoring 15 points. In the second game of the tournament the team defeated the University of New Brunswick 75-51 with JoAnne Wells scoring 30 points. In the final the Wesmen faced a tough team from Laval and came away with a 64-59 victory for the championship. Tournament MVP JoAnne Wells had 31 points in the final game. Uzo Asagwara was named a tournament all-star.

MEN’S BASKETBALL
The Wesmen men’s basketball team had a Christmas to remember as they won the 38th annual MTS Mobility Wesmen Classic. The team got off to a great start by defeating Lakehead 86-77 with Erfan Nasajpour scoring 35 points and Dan Shynkaryk scoring 24 points. In the semi-final the Wesmen defeated Cariboo 78-75 on a game winning shot with 7 seconds left by Tony Richter. Erfan Nasajpour once again led the Wesmen with 21 points. In the final the Wesmen defeated Saskatchewan 83-78 with Ryan Roper nailing a three pointer with 27 seconds left. Dan Shynkaryk had 24 points to lead the Wesmen. There was no surprise as Erfan Nasajpour was named the tournament M.V.P. Dan Shynkaryk and Tony Richter were named tournament all-stars.

MEN’S VOLLEYBALL
The Wesmen men’s volleyball team traveled to Saskatoon to take part in the Brian Mallard Invitational. The team opened the tournament with a match against Calgary and things did not start off well as they were defeated 3-1 ( 17-25,30-32, 25-19, 15-25). Jarrod Small was named player of the game for the Wesmen.The Pepperdine Waves from California were next up for the Wesmen. The Wesmen were competitive but fell 3-1 (22-25, 21-25, 25-19, 18-25) setter Dustin Addison- Schneider was named the player of the game. In the teams second game they took on the host Huskies and were defeated 3-0 (22-25,17-25, 22-25). Ben Schellenberg had a strong game and was named the player of the game. In the consolation final the Wesmen got revenge on the Calgary Dinos by winning the match 3-1 (25-23, 25-20, 17-25, 25-18). Ryan Bevan led the way for the team and was named the player of the game. Jarrod Small had a great tournament and was named to the tournament all star team.

WOMEN’S VOLLEYBALL
The women’s volleyball team was busy preparing for the second half of their Canada West schedule. The team is riding an eight match-winning streak and will travel to Simon Fraser this weekend for a pair of matches.
